Plovdiv: a city to discover - Plovdiv is an ancient city built on seven hills in southern Bulgaria. In Italian historically also known as Filippopoli. It is the second largest city in the country after the capital Sofia. From the Roman ruins to the pretty old town as a postcard, it is a city that highlights very well its ancient heritage. The ancient Roman Theatre of Philippopolis, which in the past could accommodate about 6,000 people, now hosts operas and concerts. The ancient stadium, dating back to the time of Emperor Hadrian, was originally used for athletic games, but towards the end of the fourth century the stadium began to be used as a race track for chariot races, because Emperor Theodosius banned athletic games. The ancient Roman circus could accommodate about 30,000 spectators and was one of the most impressive and indicative buildings in the city. The Old Town is marked by its Bulgarian Renaissance-style beauty, one of the best preserved in the country. The very long avenue to the right as well as to the left, near the stadium, lined with shops of all kinds and colorful flower beds, makes the walk unforgettable.

Nice houses - I think it was good to have someone explain Plodviv who actually lives there. I also liked having some free time to explore the city on our own.

Great trip, room for improvement - Amazing trip but as a tour it can improve, when compared to different experiences in similar scenarios. Still highly recommend and well worth it surely

Beautiful Plovdiv tour - Plovdiv is an amazing city and it was a great tour. The tour guide was very informative and seemed okay but I was on crutches as I had a knee injury and he didn’t really wait for me when moving from one site to the next. There’s a lot of walking to do and it was all done too fast.

Excursion to Plovdiv - We left on time, departure well organized, after 10 minutes and for luck ancara in Sofia the bus had a technical problem, after about an hour the driver recovers another makeshift bus where the heating system was defective and we travel for an hour in cold and frost, took a hole the system restarts without the possibility of control, traveling another hour at a suffocating temperature... suddenly the back door of the obsolete 90s bus opens, fortunately we were all sitting safely..., arrived in Plovdiv with over an hour late we changed guide who spoke a broken Italian, the visit was very hasty despite we still had 2.5 hours free, what about Plovdiv deserves to be visited is very beautiful, for us even more than Sofia but certainly in a different way, return with internal bus temperature of about 30 ° and got off no I tell you the overhang.

OK day out but not a huge amount to experience. - This trip is fine if you have echausted Sofia (we we think we did in a pretty full day) and could a day of relative down time. There is 4 hours of travelling (tbh we appreciated the chance to catch up on sleep) and, be warned, much walking up/down steepish roads and quite tricky/slippy pathways. Beyond the initial Roman ruins and some moderately elegant Bulgarian Renaissance buildings (we were listening Maria!) the sights were a bit sparse. Found it difficult to fill the 2.5 hours of free time even with the need to get lunch. Call out to Maria who - as most tour leaders - did a grand job of injecting energy and commentary and couldn't be faulted. I guess this a comment on what there is to see in Plovdiv than on the management of the tour.

A scam - I hired a tour in Spanish and we were placed on a bus where the guide spoke only Italian and full of Italians. No more Spaniards. We were offered a pretty bad Spanish audio guide really. The guide was kind to us but we felt cheated. I don't recommend it at all.
