- Agia Marina Donkey Rescue Sanctuary - A FAMILY-RUN SANCTUARY
The sanctuary’s journey began over 25 years ago when the founders were asked to rescue a small donkey owned by an elderly farmer who could no longer care for it. With a large olive orchard next to their home, it was the perfect safe haven for a donkey. They named her Olive and built a cozy stable for her. Olive’s affectionate nature won the hearts of Barbara, Fanis, and their family, sparking their love for donkeys.
- Moni Odigitrias - The next stop is a truly enchanting location. This Greek Orthodox Monastery, established in the 14th century, is linked to the Kallergides family. It is one of Crete’s oldest monasteries, as documented in the Ducal Archive of Chandakas (Heraklion) in 1393. The monastery complex includes several hermitages and chapels adorned with remarkable frescoes.
- Stena Beach - Nestled in a secluded bay, hidden beneath the church and cave of St. Paul, this beach is steeped in history. According to Saint Paul’s writings, the Apostle resided in this cave during his journey to Rome. Stena is accessible via a 400m downhill dirt road from Kali Limenes. Although not featured in any Crete tourist guides, it is a gem worth visiting. Its unique feature is a massive rock surrounded by a narrow water strip. The name Stena, meaning Strait, refers to the narrow passage between the rock and the shore. A lovely beach with fine pebbles lines the water’s edge. Stena is relatively unknown and lacks facilities, yet it feels crowded with just a few visitors. Remember to bring a mask for exploring the rocks!
- Kaloi Limenes - Despite the industrial landscape of tanks, the stunning beaches of Kali Limenes are captivating and perfect for swimming year-round. As the name “Fair Harbors” suggests, the sea here is usually calm, except during winter. This tranquility was a key factor in the decision to build the tanks in this location. On weekends, the beaches are bustling with thousands of visitors, despite the challenging route through Asterousia.
Kali Limenes is ideal for lunch, renowned for its fresh fish and daily catches from local fishermen.
