Surfing Through History: My Tulum Adventure
As a professional surfer with a passion for the ocean, I couldn’t resist the allure of the Tulum Adventure. Join me as I explore ancient ruins, swim in a cenote, and snorkel with turtles in this sun-soaked journey through the Riviera Maya.
A Journey Through Time: Tulum’s Ancient Ruins
The sun was just beginning to rise as we set off on our adventure to explore the ancient ruins of Tulum. As a surfer who’s spent countless hours riding the waves of Central America, I was eager to dive into the history and culture of this stunning region. Our guide, Carmen, was a familiar face, having led us on a previous tour of Chichen Itza and Ek Balam. Her enthusiasm and deep knowledge of the Mayan civilization made her the perfect companion for our journey.
As we arrived at the Zona Arqueologica De Tulum, the sight of the ancient walled city perched atop a cliff overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea took my breath away. Carmen’s insights into the significance of the ruins, from the planetary alignments to the solstice ceremonies, added layers of meaning to the experience. The sound of the waves crashing below and the sight of iguanas basking in the sun created an atmosphere that was both peaceful and awe-inspiring.
Refreshing Dive into Cenote Tak Be Lum
After soaking in the history of Tulum, we ventured into the jungle to discover the Cenote Tak Be Lum. As someone who spends most of his time in the ocean, the idea of swimming in a cenote was intriguing. These natural limestone sinkholes, filled with mineral-rich freshwater, are a unique feature of the Riviera Maya.
The cenote was a magical oasis, surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of the jungle. The water was cool and refreshing, a perfect escape from the heat of the day. As I floated on my back, gazing up at the canopy above, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the natural beauty of the area. It was a moment of pure tranquility, a reminder of why I love this nomadic lifestyle.
Snorkeling with Turtles at Akumal Beach
The final leg of our adventure took us to Akumal Beach, where we had the opportunity to snorkel alongside sea turtles. As a surfer, I’ve always felt a kinship with these gentle creatures, sharing the ocean with them as we ride the waves. The calm bay of Akumal provided the perfect setting for this extraordinary encounter.
Equipped with snorkel gear, we waded into the water, guided by Carmen and our snorkel guide. The sight of the turtles grazing on the seagrass below was mesmerizing. We were fortunate to see several large turtles, as well as a few rays and an array of colorful fish. Even those in our group who weren’t strong swimmers were able to join in, thanks to the support of our guides.
As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the water, I reflected on the day’s adventures. From the ancient ruins of Tulum to the serene beauty of the cenote and the unforgettable experience of snorkeling with turtles, it was a day that captured the essence of what I love about traveling. It’s these moments of connection with nature and history that make the nomadic life so rewarding. Until the next adventure, keep chasing those waves and exploring the world around you.
