Hugo and crew made our day - A great way to see the Mayan wonder that is Chichen Itza. Hugo was a jovial and warm tour guide from start to finish. (I'm sorry I forget the driver and tour assistant's names, but they were great as well. They served some breakfast snacks during the morning, which gave the luxury coach bus a nice airplane vibe.) Understand that this is a long day, though, since the archeological site is more than two hours away from Playa del Carmen. Also good to know is that there are multiple opportunities to buy souvenirs and liquors and they do not make a secret about this. All that said, our guide gave us good advice about what may be worth your money, and there was no hard sell. I loved getting to eat some Yucatec Mayan specialties like Cochinita pibil (pulled pork) and Sopa da lima (chicken lime soup) at the buffet, where we were entertained by dancers in various traditional costumes. This is generally a family friendly tour (as long as you can navigate questions about the human sacrifice aspect of Mayan history). When you get to the cenote, be sure to shower first before getting your life jacket, and don't wear sunscreen, as the operators seek to keep the freshwater as clean as possible. There are steps into the water as well as a 3-meter jump that was quite popular. Since this tour picks up from multiple spots on the Riviera Maya, be prepared for a slow start and somewhat protracted end to the day. (If that's a dealbreaker, you may consider a private -- and likely pricier -- tour.) We did enjoy seeing a bit of the Disney movie "Coco" as we headed back to the coast. Still, overall worth it! One last thing, the visit to the town of Valladolid was only 20 minutes, which was enough for a quick ice cream and some pictures, but not if you want to see anything except the main square.
