Sailing into Serenity: A Day of Discovery on Milos’ Waters
Drawn by the promise of hidden coves and vibrant marine life, I embarked on the Milos Sailing Experience from Pollonia. With a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, this journey offered a unique glimpse into the untouched beauty of Milos.
Setting Sail from Pollonia
The sun was just beginning to cast its golden glow over the quaint village of Pollonia as I boarded the yacht for the Milos Sailing Experience. As a marine biologist, the allure of the sea is irresistible, and the promise of exploring Milos’ hidden gems was too tempting to pass up. The boat was spacious, comfortably accommodating our group of about 20, a perfect number that allowed for both camaraderie and personal space. I couldn’t help but notice other boats, crowded to the brim, and felt grateful for the thoughtful planning of our excursion.
We set sail at 9:30, the gentle breeze carrying us away from the shore. The crew, a delightful mix of seasoned sailors and knowledgeable guides, ensured we were well taken care of. With refreshments flowing freely, including a selection of water, sodas, and local wines, the atmosphere was both relaxed and exhilarating. As someone who often writes about the intersection of marine life and human experience, I was particularly impressed by the crew’s attention to dietary needs, providing a delicious vegetarian briami for lunch.
Discovering Hidden Treasures
Our first stop was the secluded island of Poliegos, accessible only by boat. The untouched beauty of the island was a testament to nature’s artistry, and I found myself lost in the vibrant hues of the water and the rugged coastline. As we continued our journey, we paused at another swimming spot on Milos, a prelude to the day’s highlight: Kleftiko.
Kleftiko, with its towering white limestone formations and hidden caves, was a sight to behold. The history of this former pirate hideout added an air of mystery to the already stunning landscape. Equipped with snorkeling gear, we embarked on a guided tour through the underwater caves, a mesmerizing experience that brought me face-to-face with the vibrant marine life I so often study. The underwater GoPro camera captured every moment, allowing me to relive the adventure long after the day had ended.
A Perfect Ending
After exploring Kleftiko, we divided into two groups. While some enjoyed a leisurely lunch on the boat, others, including myself, took a rib boat tour to further explore the caves and admire the luxurious super yachts anchored nearby. The thrill of the rib boat ride was a perfect complement to the serene beauty of the surroundings.
Our final stop was the Old Sulphur Mine, a site accessible only by boat or 4x4. The mine’s historical significance and unique landscape made it a fitting conclusion to our journey. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm glow over the sea, we made our way back to Pollonia. The day’s adventures had been both calming and exhilarating, a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration.
Reflecting on the experience, I couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore such a remarkable part of the world. The Milos Sailing Experience had not only satisfied my thirst for adventure but had also deepened my appreciation for the delicate balance of nature and the joy of discovery.
