As you travel upriver, a licensed guide will lead you into the rainforest to search for howler monkeys, known for their territorial calls. The experience of hearing these monkeys for the first time is truly unforgettable!

Embark on a boat journey through the picturesque mangrove lagoons to the traditional fishing village of Monkey River, and then proceed upriver into one of Belize’s untouched rainforests. Be on the lookout for American crocodiles, large green iguanas lounging in the trees, turtles, and a variety of tropical birds such as herons, kingfishers, parrots, and ospreys.

A licensed local guide will lead a gentle rainforest walk to find the area’s renowned black howler monkeys. Hearing their deep, resonant calls is a memorable Belize experience! Along the path, explore native plants and towering trees, many of which have been used by local bush doctors for food and medicine for generations. With some luck, you might also see gibnuts (“Royal Rats”), peccaries, agoutis, coatimundis, tapirs, or even the elusive ocelot.
