- Dinosaur Caves Park - This charming park sits on the site of a former roadside attraction that once featured an unfinished concrete dinosaur and a sea cave. Though the dinosaur is gone and the cave has collapsed, the space now offers an imaginative playground, easy walking paths, and stunning views of the coastal cliffs and sea stacks.

Though the dinosaur is gone and the cave has collapsed, the space now offers an imaginative playground, easy walking paths, and stunning views of the coastal cliffs and sea stacks.
- Pismo Beach - Known as “The Clam Capital of the World,” Pismo Beach is a beloved beach town celebrated for its classic charm, pier, wide sandy shore, and, of course, its famous Pismo clams. A variety of shops and restaurants also keep visitors entertained.
- Monarch Butterfly Grove - For much of the year, this stand of trees offers little to see, but from late October to February, monarch butterflies use the grove as a wintering site, sometimes arriving in the thousands. Located just steps from Highway 1, the grove is reached by a quick and easy path.
- Oso Flaco Lake - Oso Flaco Lake provides another access point to the Guadalupe Nipomo Sand Dunes. From the parking lot, visitors walk past the 75-acre lake, which is excellent for birding and wildlife viewing. A two-mile round-trip hike leads to the beach access, offering another great view of the dunes. The trail is easy and mostly flat, with boardwalks along much of the way.
- Guadalupe Nipomo Dunes Center - This small museum is housed in an old building in the town of Guadalupe. Visitors can learn about the lost movie set for Cecil B. DeMille’s original The Ten Commandments, which was filmed on location in the Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve. The museum displays artifacts and pieces recovered from the Ancient Egyptian set.
- Rancho Guadalupe Dunes Preserve - This park protects one of the most epic and pristine sections of the Guadalupe-Nipomo Sand Dunes complex. Massive dunes rising hundreds of feet sit near the ocean, creating a windy, dramatic, and otherworldly landscape. Those up for a two-mile walk through the sand can hike to Mussel Rock for an even better vantage point.
- La Purisima Mission State Historic Park - La Purisima is one of the largest and best-preserved of California’s old Spanish missions. Protected as a state park, it features several buildings, gardens, and pastureland. The visitor center and museum provide context for what was once a busy and important center of mission government.
- Old Mission Santa Ines 1804 - Founded in 1804, Mission Santa Inés is a small but well-preserved mission on the outskirts of Solvang. Self-guided tours allow access to the museum, much of the mission’s interior, and the gardens. Outside, a small patch of grapes is believed to descend from the very first wine grapes grown in California.
- Solvang - Founded in 1911 by Danish Americans, Solvang bills itself as the Danish Capital of America. The town’s buildings—full of charming restaurants, bakeries, and shops—are designed to resemble traditional Danish architecture. Visitors can look for windmills, pastries, and the Hans Christian Andersen museum. Solvang is also part of Santa Barbara Wine Country, so wine tasting rooms are mixed in with the Danish vibes.
- Ostrichland USA - Over 150 ostriches and emus call this ranch and zoo home. What began as a roadside stand selling ostrich eggs has grown into a staple of the Santa Ynez Valley. Visitors can explore the 32-acre ranch, feed the birds, visit the gift shop, and still purchase ostrich eggs.
- Gaviota State Park - Gaviota Beach is uniquely framed by a railroad bridge behind it, with an old bird-covered pier to the right. Visitors can enjoy the birdwatching and photography opportunities at the most unique of the three beach stops on the tour near Santa Barbara.
- Refugio State Beach - Two Scottish brothers purchased this land in the early 20th century and turned it into a camping resort, with imported palm trees adding an extra tropical feel. The resort is gone, but the tropical trees and campgrounds remain. Visitors can enjoy the serenity of this beautiful beach and the swaying palms behind it.
- El Capitan State Beach - This quiet beach is backed by a cliff and framed by the Santa Ynez Mountains beyond. To the left, a trail leads to pleasant picnic sites right along the coast. To the right, the beach’s sand stretches along ever-higher coastal cliffs. A camp store is located up by the parking lot, and restrooms are available in the parking lot as well as next to the beach.
- Monarch Butterfly Grove - This walk through Ellwood Mesa’s eucalyptus trees is pleasant any time of year. From late October to February, migrating monarch butterflies make it an even more magical experience. The butterfly grove is about a mile round trip, and the easy trail is well-marked with signs pointing the way.
