- Piazza dei Miracoli - Officially known as Piazza del Duomo, this is the monumental heart of Pisa and one of the most renowned UNESCO World Heritage Sites globally.
Monumental Complex: The square is an extraordinary architectural ensemble surrounded by a vast green lawn. The name “Miracoli” is inspired by the beauty and perfection of the four religious buildings located here:
The Leaning Tower: The world-famous bell tower known for its tilt.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta: A masterpiece of Pisan Romanesque architecture.
The Baptistery of San Giovanni: Italy’s largest baptistery, noted for its exceptional acoustics.
The Monumental Cemetery: A historic cemetery that was once a frescoed cloister. Style: The buildings are clad in white and colored marbles, and their arrangement on the lawn creates a unique and highly evocative visual effect.
The square is considered one of the finest expressions of Italian medieval art.
-
Knights’ Square - Historically, Knights’ Square is the second most important place in Pisa after Piazza dei Miracoli, serving as the center of political and civil power for centuries.
Despite its medieval origins, the current appearance of the square is due to the Renaissance redesign by the famous architect Giorgio Vasari.
Main Buildings:
Palazzo della Carovana: Now home to the prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, it is the dominant building. Its facade is famous for its elaborate sgraffito decorations.
Palazzo dell’Orologio: A grand palace incorporating the ancient Tower of Hunger (immortalized by the story of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, mentioned by Dante).
Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri: The church of the Order, with a facade rich in decorations.
Knights’ Square is a magnificent example of Renaissance architecture in Pisa and a hub of the city’s academic life.
- Church of Santa Maria della Spina - The Church of Santa Maria della Spina is one of the smallest yet most precious and admired churches in Pisa, a true gem of Italian Gothic architecture.
Unique Location: It is situated in a very picturesque spot, directly overlooking Lungarno Gambacorti, right along the banks of the Arno River.
Name and Relic: The name “della Spina” comes from the tradition that the church once housed a thorn from Christ’s crown (now kept elsewhere, in the Church of Santa Chiara).
Architecture: The building is a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic, known for its richly decorated exterior. The facade and sides are adorned with pinnacles, spires, tabernacles, and a multitude of sculptures by important artists, including members of the Pisano family.
Size: Its small size, combined with its extraordinary sculptural richness, makes it a unique example of a reliquary church.
The Church of the Spina is an unmissable landmark on the Lungarni of Pisa.

Lungarni of Pisa - The Lungarni of Pisa are the streets that run along the banks of the Arno River, which cuts through the historic center of the city. They represent one of the most characteristic and romantic images of Pisa.
They are known for their elegant architecture, characterized by noble palaces and medieval towers that directly overlook the water. These buildings reflect the city’s wealth during its heyday as a Maritime Republic.
The river divides the city into two parts (Tramontana to the north and Mezzogiorno to the south).
Many important monuments are located along the Lungarni, including the Church of Santa Maria della Spina and Palazzo Blu.
The Lungarni are the stage for the spectacular Luminara di San Ranieri (June 16), when thousands of lanterns are lit on the facades of the palaces, creating a magical and evocative atmosphere reflected on the Arno.
They are the ideal place for a stroll, offering fascinating views that change with the light of the day. -
Terricciola - Terricciola is located in a hilly area known for its landscape dominated by vineyards, olive groves, and cultivated fields, earning it the nickname “City of Wine.”
The town is situated in a panoramic position and maintains an authentic and tranquil atmosphere. Its gentle hills offer ideal terrain and microclimate for high-quality viticulture.
It is particularly renowned for the production of red wines, especially: Chianti delle Colline Pisane DOCG. This is a softer and less structured Chianti compared to other areas, but it retains elegance and fruity aromas, with a predominant base of Sangiovese grapes.
IGT Wines and Tuscan Reds: Many wineries also produce excellent wines using international grape varieties (the so-called local “Super Tuscans”), as well as a good White Wine and the traditional Vin Santo.
Terricciola is a perfect destination for those seeking an authentic food and wine experience, with numerous wineries offering tours and tastings.
