- Peloponnese - Enjoy the scenic drive along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf until reaching the famous Corinth Canal in Peloponnese. This peninsula and geographic region in southern Greece is connected to the mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth, separating the Gulf of Corinth from the Saronic Gulf. The Peloponnese is renowned for its unique grape varieties, offering a journey through the Peloponnese Wine Roads, showcasing a modern and authentic wine world. Among the notable Greek grape varieties are the exotic Moschofilero-Mantinia and the captivating Agiorgitiko-Nemea, along with the popular dessert wine, Mavrodafni.
- Corinth Canal - The Corinth Canal is a vital waterway that traverses the narrow isthmus of Corinth, linking the Gulf of Corinth to the Saronic Gulf. This canal effectively separates the Greek mainland from the Peloponnese, transforming it into an island. It serves as an essential navigational route, allowing ships to enter the Aegean Sea. The canal, completed in the late 19th century, was a dream 2000 years in the making. Before its construction, ships had to circumnavigate the Peloponnese, adding an extra 185 nautical miles to their journey. Periander, the tyrant of Corinth (602 BC), first envisioned the canal, but due to its complexity, he built the diolkós, a stone road for transporting ships on wheeled platforms.
- Ancient Corinth (Archaia Korinthos) - Following the visit to the Corinth Canal, travel approximately 20 minutes to reach ancient Corinth. First inhabited during the Neolithic period (6500-3250 B.C.), its fertile land and strategic location at the crossroads of land and sea routes offered immense potential for communication, growth, and prosperity. Known since the Mycenaean period, Corinth’s agricultural output fueled trade expansion, particularly towards the Western Mediterranean. In the 8th century BC, Corinthian colonies like Corfu and Syracuse played significant roles in ancient Mediterranean history.
- Archaeological Site Mycenae - After exploring Ancient Corinth, travel approximately 35 minutes to Mycenae. Known as ‘Rich in Gold,’ Mycenae was the kingdom of the mythical Agamemnon, celebrated in Homer’s epics. It was the most significant palatial center of the Late Bronze Age in Greece, giving its name to the Mycenaean civilization. Myths surrounding its history have inspired countless poets and writers, from Homeric epics to contemporary works. Perseus, son of Zeus and Danai, is traditionally considered its mythical founder. According to Pausanias, Perseus named the city Mycenae after the pommel (mykes) of his sword or the Perseia spring discovered under a mushroom (mykes). Perseus’s descendants ruled Mycenae for three generations.
- Nafplio - The next stop after Mycenae is Nafplio, a 20-minute journey. Enjoy a delightful lunch (not included) in one of the most beautiful towns in Argolis, eastern Peloponnese, and one of Greece’s most romantic cities. Nafplio was the first capital of the newly established Greek state from 1823 to 1834. According to mythology, the town was founded by Nafplios, son of Poseidon and Anymone, daughter of Danaus. Its history dates back to the prehistoric era, with soldiers participating in the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War. The town declined during Roman times but flourished again in the Byzantine era. Frankish and Venetian influences are evident in its culture, architecture, and traditions. Visitors are captivated by ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments, and Venetian or neoclassical buildings.
