• Pietermaritzburg City Hall - The tour begins with a visit to Pietermaritzburg, the capital of KwaZulu Natal. Here, we’ll stop by the City Hall, reputed to be the largest brick building in the southern hemisphere. We’ll also visit the Gandhi statue before heading towards the Drakensberg mountains.
• Kamberg Nature Reserve - Our destination is the stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Drakensberg mountain range. Established in 1951, the Kamberg Nature Reserve is known for its unique natural beauty, wildlife, and historical cave rock sites. The reserve spans over 6200 hectares of rolling mountains and deep valleys, featuring an extensive network of hikes and trails. The walk to the Caves Rock Art Site takes over 60 minutes from the camp and requires an average level of fitness. The landscape is dotted with rock shelters containing San rock paintings, created by the San people over at least 4000 years. These paintings are remarkable in quality and diversity, representing the spiritual life of the San people who no longer inhabit the region.
• Nelson Mandela Capture Site - Next, we visit the Nelson Mandela Capture Site Statue and Apartheid Museum. The site features a large sculpture of Nelson Mandela made of multiple steel columns standing between 6 and 9 meters tall. Visitors must stand 35 meters away from the sculpture for it to come into clear focus. Facing west, the impressive sculpture creates a uniquely beautiful landscape for the local Howick community. The museum is dedicated to Nelson Mandela’s life and his struggle against the Apartheid government.
• Howick Falls - Our next stop is the small town of Howick to see its waterfall. Known as KwaNogqaza or Howick Falls, it is approximately 95 meters high and lies on the Umgeni River. The local Zulu people named it the “Home of the Tall” in reference to its height. Adjacent to the falls is a charming old section of Howick, featuring a selection of historical museums and antique stores to explore.
