Thimphu - After breakfast, depart for Thimphu and complete immigration formalities at the border. Arrive in Bhutan’s capital city and check into the hotel. In the evening, view the Tashichho Dzong from the outside (Fortress of the Glorious Religion). Overnight stay in Thimphu.
Exploring Thimphu
Thimphu - Spend the day touring Thimphu’s main attractions. After breakfast, visit:
- Kuensel Phodrang, featuring the massive Buddha Dordenma Statue.
- National Memorial Chorten
- Folk Heritage Museum
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.
- Sangaygang View Point
- Changangkha Monastery
- Takin Preserve Centre, home to the Takin (Bhutan’s national animal), a unique blend of goat and antelope.
- Tashichhodzong, or ‘the fortress of the glorious religion’. Originally built in 1641 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it was reconstructed in the 1960s during the reign of Bhutan’s third king in the traditional style, without plans or nails. It houses some ministries, His Majesty’s secretariat, and the central monk body and opens after 5 PM.
After sightseeing, return to the hotel. Relax and enjoy dinner. Overnight at the hotel in Thimphu.
Journey to Punakha (Distance: 76 Km, Driving time: 1.5 - 2 Hr)
Punakha - Travel to Punakha, crossing the Dochula Pass. Located about 30 km from Thimphu at an altitude of 3100 meters, the pass features 108 Druk Wangyal Khangzang Chortens (stupas) built for the well-being of all sentient beings.
Continue driving for another 1.5 hours to reach Lobesa village, where Chimi Lhakhang is situated. Accessible only by a 30-minute walk through farmland, this temple is dedicated to Lam Drukpa Kuenley (Divine Madman) and is known for its phallic symbols representing fertility and protection. Childless couples visit for blessings to conceive a child.
In the afternoon, guests can enjoy river rafting. Spend free time in Punakha town. Later, visit Punakha Dzong, located at the confluence of the Mo Chhu and Po Chhu rivers, built in 1638.
Exploring Punakha
Punakha - Travel to Phobjikha Valley: After breakfast, a 3-hour drive will take you to the tranquil Phobjikha Valley, home to the endangered Black Necked Cranes during winter.
In Phobjikha, visit the stunning 17th Century Gangtey Monastery.
Take a gentle hour-long walk along the Nature Trail for breathtaking views of the valley. Return to Punakha for the night.
The climb to the viewpoint takes about 1 1⁄2 hours, offering a spectacular view of the monastery perched on the cliffside. Stop for refreshments at the View Point Cafeteria, then continue to the monastery, which takes about 1 hour. Relax with a herbal hot stone bath after the trip.
Journey to Paro
Paro - Travel to Paro: On the way to Paro, admire the beautiful Paro Valley, known for its rich culture, scenic landscape, and mythical tales. The valley, home to Bhutan’s only international airport, is adorned with ancient monasteries.
Upon arrival, check into your hotel. After lunch, explore Paro town, featuring traditional Bhutanese houses and the serene Paro River. Visit major attractions such as Paro Rinpung Dzong, The National Museum, Kyichu Lhakhang, and explore Paro town. Visit the Namgyal Artisanal Brewery to sample locally brewed wines.
Explore a remote village with a 30-minute walk and stroll through the town. Visit Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo. Return to Paro town in the evening.
Overnight stay in Paro.
Excursion to Taktsang Monastery
Paro Taktsang - Hike to Tiger’s Nest: Embark on a hike to the Tiger’s Nest monastery, Bhutan’s most famous attraction. The monastery is dramatically perched on a cliff, about 900 m above Paro Valley. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche flew on a tigress’s back from eastern Bhutan to this site in the 8th century and meditated in a cave here, giving it the name “Tiger’s Nest”.
A 4-hour hike through diverse forests leads to the monastery. After the challenging hike, enjoy a hot stone bath, a perfect way to relax (additional charge, 24-hour notice required). In the evening, visit Soednam Zingkha Heritage home and try traditional Bhutanese sports like archery.
Departure to Airport and Return Home
Paro Airport Bird’s Eye View Point - After breakfast, check out of your hotel and explore Paro’s local attractions, including Drukgyel Dzong, Ta Dzong (Ring Pong Dzong), Paro Airport View Point, and the local market. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Bagdogra.
