Scary for Solo Female Traveller - I have used Viator for numerous tours/activities in the Carribean, Europe and most recently Vietnam and had come to trust the company as a provider of safe and reliable tours for my daughter and myself until yesterday in Phu Quoc, Vietnam on the "Unique Three Island Snorkel Tour". In summary, I alone (female solo traveller) was taken aside at the An Thoi Pier by the tour guide and told I was to board a different boat from all the other people on the bus. The boat I was told to board had no other visible passengers on the first level and an all male crew. The day got off to a disorganized start, which is honestly part of the lesson in patience and tolerating ambiguity when travelling in some countries; however in this case, things went from disorganized to scary. My only instructions after booking online were to be in the lobby of my hotel at 9am. I was waiting curbside for 20 minutes past pickup time and wondering if my pickup had been missed as numerous buses arrived and left but none had my name as a tour participant. The Bellhop at my hotel noticed I'd been awaiting a pickup for awhile and offered to call the company in my reservation email. He learned the name of the tour operator wasn't either of the two companies noted in the email (being Viator or Local Tours Asia but instead was actually called "John's Tours" . ) After the Bellhop left for his break and returned and found I was still waiting, he called back to the number in the email to check the new ETA. I was eventually picked up by a nice bus and was happy to be on my way. All passengers received a very welcome bottle of water. I would not have even written this review if bus-late pickup up and lack of info on how to identify my bus/shuttle/car was my only concern as that is just a part of travel in some countries. HOWEVER, when our bus arrived at An Thoi Pier, things went sideways when all guests on my bus boarded the boat (I was last to board as I was at the back of the bus.) As I went to board I was pulled aside by Dat, the tour guide, and told I would be going on a different boat. Dat pointed at the boat on which I could see three male staff. I asked why I was being put on a boat different from the other guests and was told that "the office called and said you are to go on that boat". This made no sense as I had chatted with two other tourists on the bus who were also doing the "Unique Three Island Snorkel Boat Tour". Still trusting the process and trying to understand why I was to take a different boat from all the others on my bus, I asked if there was a guide on that boat that spoke English. He said "yes" and pointed to a man on the boat. When my guide spoke to the man in Vietnamese and gestured toward me, the man yelled at him in Vietnamese. I asked the guide again why I was singled out to go on this boat (I couldn't see any other guests on that boat), he reiterated that "the office" told him I should go on that boat but couldn't explain which office. I asked why I couldn't go with the group I came with and said I didn't want to go with the man that was angry, yelling and obviously did not want me onboard. He laughed and said "ok". I was perplexed by all of this and felt really unsafe. I walked back to the boat my bus companions were on and was aware staff were talking about me and laughing. I asked if I should climb the ladder up to the 2nd level (as the first level was full) and Dat and another staff shrugged and motioned for me to go ahead. I climbed up the ladder realizing after that this was a ladder for staff and the the stair case for participants was at the front of the boat. By the time I had boarded, everyone else had life jackets and wrist bands so I asked for both. The life Jacket was so large (I weigh 125lbs and am 5' 6) and some straps were broken so it kept floating up on me in the water. The snorkel mask had a broken adjustment clip on the left side so I spent the first few minutes trying to hold the mask onto my face with both hands to seal it. I went back to the boat and requested another mask which did work very well for the remaining time and for the next snorkel opportunity. (Again, I wouldn't have taken the time to write a review if my concerns were about tardiness and gear alone). On a positive note, the lunch served on the boat was a highlight! It was served hot and was of high quality and plentiful. I tried to contact all companies mentioned for an explanation before writing this review to give them a chance to respond but was not successful, hence my review here. I don't engage in social media but I want to make Viator and other women aware of my experience. A final note is that John's Tours could improve their tourist experience on their adventures by having staff assist guests to disembark at John's Tours Island because the floating dock has large gaps and steps so steep that several passengers were having trouble navigating safely on their own and were asking for assistance from other guests. (I must note that there was a staff person that did help people disembark the boat but that's where the help ended.) No one helped to get the rest of the way over the gaps in the dock or on the return to the boat along the dock or boarding the boat. (I know this as I helped a woman who's husband was still on the island and then watched from the 2nd level as others scrambled to negotiate the moving dock without falling.) I've been travelling to under-developed countries for the past 31 years so am pretty travel savvy but have never felt so scared, on my guard and targeted as I did on this day doing a simple touristy excursion. I am not requesting a refund. I just want an answer as to why "the office" singled me out to go on a boat without my tour group and I'd like to know which "office" made the directive...Viator, Local Tours Asia, or John's Tours? I believe Viator, as the company I booked through who sub- contracts or owns the others owe me an explanation.
