A professional English-speaking tour guide will collect guests from their hotel and transport them to the Choeung Ek Genocide Center, located 9 miles south of Phnom Penh. This notorious site, once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, was transformed by the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, into the infamous killing fields, where approximately 20,000 victims were executed. Over a span of three years, 2.5 million people were massacred and buried here. After paying respects to the deceased, guests will return to Phnom Penh to visit the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum (S21). Originally a popular high school, Pol Pot converted it into a high-security prison known as the “hill of the poisonous trees.” Around 20,000 individuals were imprisoned there, many of whom were tortured for information. Today, it stands as a museum and a poignant reminder of a somber past. The guide will ensure guests are returned to their hotel or guesthouse, and they are welcome to ask any questions during the tour.
