- Royal Palace - Constructed between 1866 and 1870, the Royal Palace was built after King Norodom moved the royal capital from Oudong to Phnom Penh. It stands on the site of an old citadel known as Banteay Keo. The palace faces east and is located on the western bank of the confluence of the Tonle Sap and Mekong Rivers, known as Chaktomuk.
- Silver Pagoda - Situated on the southern side of the Royal Palace, the Silver Pagoda is officially named Wat Ubaosoth Ratanaram, also referred to as Wat Preah Keo Morakot. It is commonly known as the Temple of the Emerald-Crystal Buddha or simply Wat Preah Keo.
- Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - The most infamous of Cambodia’s 189 interrogation centers was S-21, located in a former school now known as Tuol Sleng, named after the hill it occupies. Between 14,000 and 17,000 prisoners were held and tortured here, often in rudimentary brick cells constructed in former classrooms.
- Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - Located 9 miles south of Phnom Penh, the Choeung Ek Genocide Center is known for its tragic history as the killing fields. Once an orchard and a Chinese cemetery, it was transformed by the Khmer Rouge, led by Pol Pot, into a site where approximately 20,000 victims were executed. Over three years, 2.5 million people were massacred and buried here.
