- Silver Pagoda - Wat Preah Keo Morakot, also known as the Silver Pagoda, is positioned in the southern section of the Royal Palace complex. Previously called Wat Uborsoth Rotannaram, it is where the King engaged in worship, prayer, and observed every Buddhist Silas Day.
- Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - The Killing Fields of Cheung Ek, located 15 kilometers southwest of Phnom Penh, gained notoriety from the film “Killing Field.” It was a site where over 17,000 civilians were executed and buried in mass graves, many brought here after being detained and tortured at Toul Sleng. This location serves as a stark reminder of the Khmer Rouge regime’s atrocities. At the center is a 17-story glass stupa containing 8,000 skulls exhumed from mass graves. Open daily. Note: Both Tuol Sleng Museum and the Killing Fields exhibits may be distressing for some and are not recommended for young children and sensitive adults.
- Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - In 1975, Tuol Svay Prey High School was repurposed by Pol Pot’s security forces into a prison known as Security Prison 21 (S-21). It quickly became the largest detention and torture center in the country. Over 17,000 individuals held at S-21 were transported to the extermination camp at Choeung Ek for execution; those who perished during torture were interred in mass graves on the prison grounds. S-21 has been transformed into the Tuol Sleng Museum, which stands as a memorial to the Khmer Rouge’s crimes.
