- Royal Palace - Today, join a group tour where the guide will begin pickups from various hotels, with pickup times ranging from 7:30 am to 8:30 am. Guests should wait in the hotel lobby, ready to depart as soon as the guide arrives. Once everyone is picked up, the guide will take the group to the Royal Palace, constructed in 1866 by the French after King Norodom moved the royal capital from Oudong. Situated on the western banks of the Tonle Sap and Mekong River, the palace complex showcases magnificent Khmer architecture, divided into four main compounds.
- Silver Pagoda - The Palace grounds also house the Silver Pagoda, named for its floor made of 5,329 silver tiles. Discover the history of the Khmer kings, who resided here continuously, except during the Khmer Rouge’s control in 1975. Admire the gold and jeweled Buddha statues in the Silver Pagoda and the Angkor Wat style Bell Tower.
- Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum - Next, explore the turbulent era of the Khmer Rouge at the notorious Tuol Sleng Museum. Located in a former high school that served as the infamous Security Prison 21, the Genocide Museum recounts the story of the Killing Fields and the torture and executions that occurred from 1975-79. View exhibits that narrate the stories of some of the estimated 20,000 prisoners who perished.
- Choeung Ek Genocidal Center - The serene green fields of Cheung Ek may not reveal the horrors that occurred there. Located 17km from Phnom Penh, Cheung Ek gained fame from the movie “The Killing Fields.” Today, a large memorial stands to honor the 17,000 victims who died here under Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot. The remnants within the memorial and the mass graves scattered across the area serve as a reminder of the victims’ suffering. This journey into Cambodia’s past provides insight into the cruelty of the Khmer Rouge regime and highlights the resilience and courage of the Cambodian people in rebuilding their nation.
Return to the city center for breathtaking views of the Tonle Sap and Mekong River Side before the tour concludes.
