The tour begins at the Independence Visitor’s Center with an introduction to Black History during the colonial era. Participants will learn about the significant contributions of Black Americans in the nation’s founding. The tour will then proceed to the President’s House, where the group will learn about the nine enslaved individuals who lived there, including the story of Martha Washington’s handmaid who escaped slavery.

The following stop is Congo Square, a historic site where people of African descent held celebrations and where both free and enslaved Africans are still interred. The tour continues to Mother Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Here, attendees will hear about the liberation of a woman whose enslaver attempted to recapture her, and the subsequent trial of her rescuers.

Additionally, the tour includes visits to iconic sites such as Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Congress Hall, and more.
