Once a frontier between the east and west, separating two great empires, its underground tunnels still hold many mysteries. Today, it hosts “Exit,” one of Europe’s largest music festivals, within its robust walls.
- Novi Sad - Strolling through the oldest streets of Novi Sad, one can admire the stunning baroque, classical, and Neo-gothic architecture with vibrant facades. The city’s charming atmosphere and its residents’ enduring tranquility and kindness are captivating. Remarkably, they convinced Empress Maria Theresa to sell them the city for 80,000 Hungarian forints! Since then, it has been a cultural hub for Serbians, often referred to as “Serbian Athens.”
A traditional lunch break is scheduled around 1 pm (at your own expense).
- Fruska Gora National Park - Fruska Gora Mountain, once an island in the ancient Pannonian Sea, now stands as Serbia’s oldest national park, quietly watching over the city and region. While enjoying its scenic slopes, visitors can explore New Hopovo, a significant Orthodox monastery. Deeper in the forest lies a monument to the fallen soldiers of World War II, aptly named “The Freedom.”
- Sremski Karlovci - Tracing the path of the great Serbian migration of the late 17th century leads to Sremski Karlovci. Here, visitors can explore Serbia’s oldest high school, the renowned “4 lions” fountain, and the Orthodox cathedral, uncovering the mystery of the “other Sun” that locals proudly claim.
To conclude this thrilling journey, a visit to a local wine cellar offers the chance to taste Bermet, a unique dessert wine made exclusively in this region. The red variety was a favorite of Empress Maria Theresa and is rumored to have been served on the Titanic!
Note: The remaining hours will mostly be spent in Novi Sad, allowing free time for shopping and a lunch break.
