Manu National Park - VISIT NINAMARCA AND PAUCARTAMBO.
The journey begins bright and early at 5:30 a.m. when a bilingual guide will collect travelers from their hotel in Cusco to embark on an unforgettable adventure to Manu National Park, one of the most biodiverse locations on the planet. The route offers stunning views of Andean landscapes, cloud forests, and the unique transition between ecosystems.
The first stop is Ninamarca, an ancient archaeological site perched on a mountain ridge. Visitors will encounter the enigmatic pre-Inca funerary towers (chullpas), constructed by ancient cultures to honor significant leaders. The guide will share intriguing tales about their history and Andean traditions.
The journey continues for approximately 30 minutes to the delightful colonial town of Paucartambo, renowned for its vibrant balconies and traditional architecture. Here, a local breakfast awaits, followed by a brief stroll through its cobblestone streets and main square, uncovering the culture and history of this charming Andean town.
Paucartambo - ENTRY TO MANU NATIONAL PARK AND AJANACO VIEWPOINT.
Departing Paucartambo, the journey proceeds along a picturesque mountain road to Ajanaco Pass (3,600 m), the official entrance to Manu National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. A short 7-minute walk leads to a natural viewpoint offering breathtaking vistas of the Tres Cruces mountains, the expansive Andean cloud forest, and the onset of the Amazon rainforest—a perfect spot for photos and to admire the dramatic landscape changes.
From Ajanaco, the descent into the mystical cloud forest begins, where the constant mist creates an enchanting atmosphere. Along the trail, travelers can spot exotic birds such as the blue-banded toucanet, the golden-headed quetzal, and the crested quetzal. With some luck, the elusive Andean bear, one of the rarest animals in the region, may also be seen.
By mid-morning, the journey reaches the San Pedro area, where a relaxing outdoor lunch is enjoyed amidst the jungle’s sounds.
Pilcopata - Cock-of-the-Rock & Lodge Arrival
Post-lunch, the journey delves deeper into the forest to a special viewing area to observe the Andean cock-of-the-rock, Peru’s national bird. Known for its vivid red plumage and captivating courtship display, this bird provides one of the most remarkable wildlife spectacles in the Manu region.
Along the way, travelers should keep an eye out for woolly monkeys, vibrant tropical birds, wild orchids, and numerous other species that make this forest a haven for nature enthusiasts.
Around 5:00 p.m., arrival at Bambú Lodge, a comfortable jungle lodge nestled in lush rainforest, offers a chance to relax and soak in the serene Amazon atmosphere. In the evening, an optional night walk is available, providing an exciting opportunity to explore the jungle after dark. Equipped with flashlights and rubber boots, participants search for intriguing nocturnal creatures such as tarantulas, poison frogs, snakes, armadillos, and night monkeys.
A perfect beginning to an unforgettable adventure in Manu.
