Jungle Pacaya Samiria Peasant House
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Begin the day with a morning pickup from your accommodation in Iquitos, or from our office, using a private car or minivan (depending on the group size). Travel south for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach the village of Nauta. During the journey, enjoy a brief overview of the city of Iquitos, its surroundings, and some of its main attractions.
Depart from the port of Nauta by private boat, heading upstream for 3 hours. Delight in the stunning scenery and the chance to spot river dolphins (both grey and pink), herons, turtles, and many other species, along with spectacular flora.
Arrive at the community of Santo Domingo, the entry checkpoint to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Here, register and present tickets to the officer in charge. Entry to Pacaya Samiria is managed and regulated by SERNANP (National Service of Protected Natural Areas).
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Continue boating for 30 minutes to reach the community of Buenos Aires. Along the way, observe the flora and fauna along the riverbanks. Look out for birds, especially herons (such as crowned herons or snowy egrets) and kingfishers.
Embark on a walking expedition through the primary jungle to observe wildlife and enjoy nature.
Take a night walk to search for spiders, snakes, lizards, frogs, or rodents, while listening to the various sounds of nocturnal animals.
Overnight stay in a typical village house in the community of Buenos Aires. Sleep in single beds with mosquito nets.
Jungle Pacaya Samiria Camping
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Rise early to enjoy the sunrise in the rainforest and begin the expedition. Keep an eye out for monkeys and sloths.
Board a canoe to explore the riverbanks, staying alert to movements and sounds to observe the fauna in their morning routine by the river.
Sail for about 3 hours on the Pucate River, venturing deeper into the primary jungle. Experience artisanal sport fishing for piranhas, as the locals do. The guide will instruct, assist, and provide all necessary equipment. If skilled, you might even catch Acarahuazu (Oscarfish), Fasaco (common Trahira), among others.
Observe pink dolphins (Inia geoffrensis) and grey dolphins or tucuxis. This is your chance to swim in the Pucate River within Pacaya Samiria.
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Walk through the untouched jungle to observe the Amazon’s flora and fauna. Take a walking tour to see the Lupuna, one of the largest trees in the Amazon rainforest.
Explore Lake Iricahua (cocha). To reach it, walk around 2-3 hours inside the jungle. In Iricahua, see different monkey species such as woolly monkeys, howler monkeys, titi monkeys, among others. Additionally, this lake is home to Paiche (Arapaima Gigas), the largest fish in the Amazon rainforest. Other animals to spot here include turtles and alligators basking in the sun.
Join a night expedition to find and observe black and white alligators (large river lizards).
Set up a campsite in the primary jungle. Sleep in tents.
Camping Sleep in the Jungle Day 3
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Wake up very early to search for primates while exploring by canoe.
Enjoy a morning botanical walk to discover various medicinal plants of the Amazon jungle. Learn to cut and drink from a vine called “Water Noose” (Water rope). Pack up camping gear and prepare to venture deeper into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve.
Sail for approximately 2 hours to the next destination. Embark on an expedition to find primates and other animals in their natural habitat. The deeper into the Amazon jungle, the greater the chance of seeing wildlife.
Explore streams by canoe. At the end of the stream, disembark and walk through the surroundings, observing wildlife such as the nine-banded armadillo (Carachupa), the giant anteater, and rodents like Paca agutí (Majaz) and Black agutí (Añuje), among others.
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Night expedition to search for and listen to nocturnal animals, including alligators, frogs, snakes, among others.

Campsite Exploring the Jungle
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Enjoy a boat ride of approximately 2 hours to reach the next camping area, deeper into the virgin forest, in a local area called Quebrada del Friar (Friar stream). The deeper into the jungle, the more opportunities to see a variety of animal, bird, and fish species.
Embark on a jungle hike to find and observe monkeys (such as the howler monkey or the choro monkey) and other animals. Stay alert as this area is ideal for spotting macaws (red and green macaw or ar chloroptera, blue macaw and yellow or ara ararauna, among others). In Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, find 2 of the 8 macaw species found in Peru.
Take an excursion to search for and observe giant river otters.
Join a night canoe trip to look for wildlife. Take a night walk to search for the nine-banded armadillo (carachupa or Dasypus novemcinctus) and rodents such as black agutí (whet or Dasyprocta fuliginosa) and bale agutí (majaz).

Bird Watching and Return Day 5
Pacaya Samiria National Reserve - Embark on an early morning canoe trip to awaken the senses. Engage in bird watching, the best time to see wild birds in their natural habitat along the riverbank and into the jungle.
Take a jungle hike in search of primates, exploring surrounding lakes (cochas) in search of wildlife.
Begin the return journey, stopping in the community of Buenos Aires to stretch and have the opportunity to support the community by purchasing handmade crafts if desired.
Return by boat to the village of Nauta. Enjoy ground transportation from Nauta to Iquitos. Arrive at our office, or if preferred, be taken to your accommodation in Iquitos or the airport.
