Culture Buff

Sometimes a cabin in the woods with a pile of books is my idea of a good destination, but I also love cities that can be explored by foot and public transportation. I enjoy walking around and seeing what people are doing. Whenever I’m in a foreign city for a film festival or for pleasure, I like to check out more mundane locations like grocery stores and book stores that give me an idea of how people live their everyday lives. My earliest travel memory is riding in the way, way back of a station wagon on the way to the World’s Fair. I would spend my perfect day in San Francisco because its physical beauty continually takes my breath away. I would stay at The Fairmont Hotel. My most memorable moment here was the first time I experienced the rain in The Tonga Room.

The activities that can't be missed

1. Seeing a movie at one of San Francisco’s many film festivals, especially one at the Castro Theatre. Aside from the San Francisco International Film Festival, you could plan a great trip around the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, Noir City Film Festival or SF Sketchfest.

2. A walk at Crissy Field with a stop for coffee at the Warming Hut (and that under-the-bridge view from Vertigo).

3. A ferry ride to Tiburon.

My favorite places to eat

1. State Bird Provisions: Put your name on the walk-in list and then go have a drink at Fat Angel around the corner while you’re waiting.

2. Go to Mission Chinese.

3. La Taqueria in the Mission District.

The places you should definitely see

1. The city from the top of Twin Peaks.

2. Visit the Ferry Building.

3. The new Exploratorium.

My favorite hidden gems

1. Japantown: I love browsing in Kinokuniya Bookstore and the fancy bathrooms at New People.

2. Tosca Café.

3. The Estero Trail at the Point Reyes National Seashore.

The place I'm most excited to go next is Turkey.
