Samba is a vibrant Brazilian music genre that emerged from the Afro-Brazilian communities in Bahia during the late 19th century. Sadly, African cultural expressions such as Capoeira and Candomblé faced suspicion and were criminalized. Samba was no exception. However, over the past century, it has transformed from a persecuted culture into a national symbol. Today, Samba is honored by UNESCO as an “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.”

The class will be held at Brazil’s first Capoeira School, established in 1937 by Mestre Bimba, the pioneer of Capoeira Regional. The school was regarded as a significant quilombo of resistance, steadfast in preserving cultural elements in Salvador, and has earned great respect ever since.
