• Swissair Flight 111 Memorial - Swissair Flight 111 (SR111/SWR111) was an international passenger flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City to Cointrin Airport in Geneva, Switzerland, also a codeshare with Delta Air Lines. On September 2, 1998, the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, registration HB-IWF, tragically crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near Halifax Stanfield International Airport at St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometers from shore, equidistant from Peggy’s Cove and Bayswater, resulting in the loss of all 229 passengers and crew. This was the deadliest accident in Swissair’s history and the most severe involving the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, as well as the second-deadliest aviation accident in Canada, following Arrow Air Flight 1285R.
• Queensland Beach - Just a 40-minute drive from the Memorial, Queensland Beach Provincial Park offers stunning views and is a popular destination in Nova Scotia. Located in the South Shore region, this small but well-loved beach is supervised in July and August. • Mahone Bay - Visit Mahone Bay to capture a photo of the famous three churches and explore a few local stops. Continue to the Lunenburg Historic District. In 1753, many new immigrants were brought from Halifax to Lunenburg, intended as the center of a planned settlement. The first arrivals lived in Lunenburg and had farm lots throughout the peninsula, including Mahone Bay, under the leadership of mariner Ephraim Cook. Settlers on the Lunenburg Peninsula, including Mahone Bay, were foreign Protestants from Germany, Switzerland, and Montbéliard. The village was renowned for shipbuilding in the 18th century. Mahone Bay’s boat-building history began with the Mi’kmaq, who crafted birch bark canoes. The British initiated industrial ship production, establishing sawmills for lumber.
• Lunenburg - The Old Town of Lunenburg is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic District, celebrated as one of North America’s best-preserved colonial settlements. Founded in 1753 and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, it offers much to visitors. Historically, Lunenburg’s economy thrived on offshore fishing, and today it hosts Canada’s largest secondary fish-processing plant. The town flourished in the late 1800s, with many architectural treasures from that era. This vibrant fishing village boasts stunning architecture and a working waterfront that reflect its rich history. Visit the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, St. John’s Anglican Church, Lunenburg Academy, hop aboard the famous Bluenose schooner, or stroll down the colorful streets to soak in the charm of this UNESCO heritage village.
