Arrival at Paro Airport - Thimphu
Tachogang Lhakhang Bridge - The flight to Paro offers stunning and breathtaking views of the Himalayan Mountains. If the weather is clear, you may catch a glimpse of Mt. Everest (8,848 m, 29,198 ft) and other Himalayan ranges. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, a representative (Guide) will warmly welcome you and drive you to Thimphu (50 km), a journey of about an hour. Along the way, visit Tachog Lhakhang, located along the Paro-Thimphu highway, before Chhuzom. It’s just a 10-minute walk from the highway and is a fantastic spot for photography with its stunning views and tranquil atmosphere.
Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten) - One of the most popular attractions in Thimphu, this chorten is a daily place of worship for many locals. The Memorial Chorten is frequented by elderly people, children, and others on their way to work, school, and home.
Motithang Takin Preserve - Known to many as the Mini Zoo, the Motithang Takin Preserve is a small natural habitat for the Takin, Bhutan’s national animal. This rare animal belongs to the goat-antelope family, and a specific species is found only in Bhutan.
Thangthong Dewachen Nunnery - Built over 50 years ago, Zilukha Nunnery, also known as Druthob Goemba, houses around 60 nuns. A visit to this site rejuvenates the soul with its peaceful surroundings, making it hard to leave. From here, you can capture a spectacular view of Tashichho Dzong for a beautiful photo album.
Jungshi Handmade Paper Factory - The Jungshi factory is renowned for producing traditional paper using an ancient method rather than modern techniques. Visitors to the factory can enjoy a demonstration of the paper-making process. One of the most popular activities in Thimphu, you can purchase this unique paper as interesting souvenir gifts.
Centenary Farmers Market - The Centenary Farmers’ Market is one of the most vibrant and bustling marketplaces in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. Located in the city’s heart, this market is a hub of activity and commerce, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of Bhutanese people and the country’s rich agricultural heritage. The market is famous for its wide variety of fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables. Thimphu - Gangtey
Buddha Dordenma - After breakfast, visit the Dordenma Buddha statue. Perched atop a hill in Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital and largest city, is a massive, golden Buddha. This enormous statue measures about 51.5 meters and is made of bronze, gilded in gold.
Dochula Pass - Though Dochula is a 40-minute drive from Thimphu, it is definitely worth visiting, especially for those interested in Thimphu sightseeing. Here, you will witness 108 Druk Wangyal chortens.
Gangtey - Punakha
Gangtey Monastery - Visit Gangtey Gompa, dating back to the 17th century, perched atop a small hill overlooking almost the entire Phobjikha Valley. The spectacular Gangtey Monastery is surrounded by a large village inhabited mainly by the families of the 140 gomchens who devotedly care for the blessed monastery. A 17th-century Buddhist monastery, it is one of the most famous and sacred sites to visit in the entire valley. A must-visit when in Gangtey.
Chimi Lhakhang Temple - Chimi Lhakhang, the Temple of Fertility, was blessed by Lam Drukpa Kuenley, known as the Divine Madman for his eccentric behavior. He is also considered a symbol of fertility, and many childless couples visit his temple for blessings.
Punakha Dzong - Then visit Punakha Dzong, one of the majestic fortresses located between Pho Chu (Male River) and Mo Chu (Female River). Punakha was the ancient capital of Bhutan.
Punakha Suspension Bridge - Visit the longest suspension bridge across the dzong.
Punakha - Paro
Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten - After breakfast, enjoy a 45-minute hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyel Chorten with picturesque views of the rice terraces along the river. Then drive to Paro.
Rinpung Dzong - Rinpung houses both the monastic body and district government offices, including the local courts. Known as Paro Dzong, it was built in 1644 under the order of Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, the unifier of Bhutan. This dzong has been used on various occasions to protect Paro from Tibetan invasions. Below the dzong is a traditional wooden bridge called Nyamai Zam, reconstructed after the original was washed away in a 1969 flood.
Paro Taktsang
Paro Taktsang - Taktsang Monastery: This wooden structure stands bravely on a cliff. It is said that the great Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress and established this monastery when he brought the teachings of Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th Century. From the road, the hike toward Taktsang follows an uphill route, taking approximately 5-6 hours at an average walking pace on a clear, sunny day.
