Established in the 15th century, this tranquil lhakhang draws pilgrims and visitors seeking spiritual enlightenment. Surrounded by lush greenery, it features stunning architecture and picturesque views of the Paro Valley. Inside, vibrant murals and intricate carvings illustrate Buddhist teachings and the life of Thangthong Gyalpo, along with sacred relics like a statue of Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion. Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten) - Upon reaching Thimphu, you’ll check into your hotel and have some time to relax after your journey. In the afternoon, your exploration of the capital begins with a visit to the National Memorial Chorten, one of the city’s most cherished spiritual landmarks.
The National Memorial Chorten was built in memory of H.M. Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, Bhutan’s third king and the “Father of Modern Bhutan.” Initially envisioned by the late king as a monument dedicated to world peace, it was later completed and consecrated by the Royal Family and the Cabinet on July 28, 1974. Adorned with intricate carvings, golden spires, and vibrant murals depicting Buddhist teachings, the chorten stands as both a sacred site and a symbol of peace and compassion. Locals and monks frequently gather here to perform circumambulation and prayers, creating a deeply spiritual and calming atmosphere. This iconic landmark reflects the heart of Thimphu’s spiritual life and Bhutan’s enduring pursuit of harmony and well-being.
Buddha Dordenma - Buddha Point, locally known as Kuensel Phodrang, is a popular destination in Thimphu, renowned for its breathtaking views and the country’s largest statue of Buddha. The impressive 51.5-meter bronze statue sits atop a hill and features three stories filled with chapels, housing 125,000 smaller Buddha statues. The well-paved road leading to Buddha Point is a favorite spot for drives, cycling, jogging, and leisurely walks, drawing visitors who come to pay homage. At night, the view of Thimphu from this vantage point is particularly enchanting, offering a magical panorama of the city illuminated against the backdrop of the Himalayas. Buddha Point is a place of tranquility and reflection, making it a must-visit site for both locals and tourists.
Thimphu’s Weekend Market - The day concludes with a visit to the Farmers’ Weekend Market, a vibrant gathering place filled with local culture, fresh produce, and traditional crafts. Immerse yourself in the lively atmosphere as you interact with locals dressed in colorful Bhutanese attire and savor the authentic flavors of Bhutanese cuisine. If fortune favors you, you may also witness an exciting game of traditional archery at Changlimithang Stadium, Bhutan’s national sport and a cherished cultural pastime.

Offering an eight-year program, students learn various techniques, including painting, woodcarving, clay sculpture, and mask-making, with a special focus on traditional thangkha painting that attracts foreign students eager to master this intricate art form. The institute also features a showroom where student works are displayed and sold at reasonable prices, providing visitors with the opportunity to purchase authentic Bhutanese crafts while supporting emerging artists. This vibrant institution serves as a vital center for cultural preservation and artistic expression in Bhutan.
Tashichho Dzong (Thimphu Dzong) - Tashichhodzong, the “fortress of the glorious religion,” was originally built in 1641 and rebuilt by King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck in the 1960s. This impressive dzong houses several ministries, His Majesty’s secretariat, and the central monk body, making it a key administrative center in Thimphu. Its stunning architecture attracts visitors, especially during the Thimphu Tshechu in autumn and when the monk body is in residence at Punakha Dzong. Tashichhodzong stands as a vital symbol of Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage and spiritual life.
Drive to Punakha via Dochula
Dochula Pass - On the way, stop for a scenic photo shoot and a cup of tea/coffee at Dochula, situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters just 30 kilometers from Thimphu, offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Himalayas, especially on clear days. Renowned for its 108 chortens (stupas) built in honor of Bhutanese soldiers who lost their lives in a 2003 conflict, the pass is adorned with vibrant prayer flags that enhance its spiritual ambiance. Visitors can explore nature trails, enjoy the serene landscape, and visit the nearby Druk Wangyal Lhakhang, a beautiful temple dedicated to the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. Combining natural beauty with rich cultural significance, Dochula Pass is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling through Bhutan.
Chimi Lhakhang Temple - Chhimi Lhakhang, perched on a small hillock and accessible via a 15-minute walk through lush rice fields, is a revered fertility temple visited by couples facing challenges in conceiving. Many have been blessed with children after receiving blessings from a replica of Drukpa Kuenley’s iron bow and arrow, his scriptures, and the phallus symbol. Legend has it that Lam Drukpa Kuenley defeated a demoness that transformed into a dog and buried it under a hill, declaring “chi-med” (no dog) and building a black stupa in its place. He transformed the demoness into a guardian deity, renaming her Chhoekim, meaning “the one converted to religion.” Today, Chhoekim serves as the protector of Chhimi Lhakhang, adding to the temple’s significance as a place of faith and hope for many couples.
Punakha Dzong - Punakha Dzong, built at the junction of the Phochhu and Mochhu rivers by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal in 1637, stands as a symbol of a unified Bhutan and serves as the winter residence for the central monk body and district administration. After significant damage from glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF), it has been beautifully restored to its original grandeur. Renowned for its exceptional woodwork, the dzong houses the Kuenray chamber, where Bhutan’s kings, including Gongsar Ugyen Wangchuck in 1907, are crowned. It also contains sacred relics of the Southern Drukpa Kagyu School, such as the Rangjung Kasarpani. From the cantilever bridge over the Mochhu to the serene lake behind the dzong, this site captivates visitors with its rich cultural heritage.
Punakha Suspension Bridge - The Punakha Suspension Bridge, at 180 meters long, is the longest in Bhutan, offering stunning views of the Po Chhu River and the surrounding valley. It connects Punakha to the picturesque village of Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakhang. As you walk across, the bridge gently sways, providing an exhilarating experience amid the natural beauty. It’s an ideal spot for photos, where you can enjoy the cool breeze, admire the crystal-clear waters below, and absorb the positive energy from the fluttering prayer flags. Surrounded by majestic mountains, the Punakha Suspension Bridge is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the charm of Punakha.

Shaped like a chorten with a striking white tower, the monastery offers stunning views of the Paro Chhu river and surrounding valleys.
