- Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi - Garibaldi Square serves as the central hub of Parma. The civic center of the city is located here, distinct from the religious center found a few hundred meters away at Piazza Duomo. This square is also often referred to as Piazza del Comune or Piazza Grande.
- Basilica di Santa Maria della Steccata (Madonna della Steccata) - The elegant Renaissance structure of Santa Maria della Steccata is the first church in Parma designed with a central plan. Inside, visitors can admire one of Francesco Mazzola’s masterpieces, known as Parmigianino: the large arch above the main altar, frescoed between 1533 and 1539.
- Teatro Regio - Recognized today as a temple of opera tradition, it is one of Italy’s most prestigious theaters. It features a neoclassical facade, famously known as “Parma yellow,” and refined interiors adorned with gilded stuccos.
Ticket cost: 10€
- Baptistery of Parma - The Baptistery of San Giovanni Battista, commonly known as the Baptistery of Parma, is an octagonal structure clad in pink Verona marble, symbolizing eternity. It is considered one of the most significant transitional points between Romanesque and early Gothic styles in Italy.
Ticket cost: 10€ (includes Diocesan Museum)
- Museo Diocesano - The concept of establishing the museum dates back to the 1990s, initiated by the Diocese’s treasurer, Monsignor Franco Grisenti, who proposed an exhibition of paintings, sacred vestments, and silverware, along with a lapidary in the basement rooms for statues from the Baptistery.
Ticket cost: 10€ (includes Baptistery entrance)
- Cattedrale di Parma - The Cathedral of Parma, or the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, is a Romanesque-style building constructed starting in 1106 and still regarded as one of Italy’s medieval masterpieces. Although the Romanesque layout is well preserved, much of the interior, including the central nave, dome, and transept, has been altered by later Renaissance interventions. Additionally, some side chapels have been frescoed in Gothic style in more recent times.
- Camera di San Paolo - The Chamber of San Paolo is situated within the San Paolo museum and offers a museum itinerary that recreates the rooms of the private apartment of Abbess Giovanna da Piacenza, a significant figure in Parma’s religious and cultural context in the early sixteenth century.
In the Cella di Santa Caterina, visitors can find important frescoes and decorations reflecting Renaissance art and the religious tradition of the time. The works in the cell depict scenes from the life of Saint Catherine and other religious themes.
Ticket cost: 8€
- Palazzo della Pilotta - Initially designed to accommodate the services of the Farnese court, one of the most influential noble families from the 15th to the 18th centuries, Pilotta Palace was intended to integrate the system of ducal residences. It connected the Representative Palace with a more modest building that housed the Farnesian court’s headquarters, located on the opposite bank and no longer existing today.
Ticket cost: 18€
-
Teatro Farnese - The Farnese Theater is regarded as the first modern theater in the West. Situated on the first floor of the Palazzo della Pilotta, it was constructed between 1617 and 1618 in the ancient “Sala d’Arme” of the court, designed by the Ferrara architect Giovan Battista Aleotti, known as Argenta.
Ticket: included in the Palazzo della Pilotta fee (18€) - Parco Ducale - The most renowned garden in Parma, with its 208,000 square meters of greenery, represents a vital natural oasis for the city’s residents.
The Ducal Park is in neoclassical style and is notable for its avenues and sections that intersect in a trapezoidal shape. Walking through the park, visitors can admire some of Parma’s historical monuments, such as the Palazzo Ducale del Giardino and the Trianon Fountain.
