The Champs-Élysées dates back to 1640 when a line of trees was planted, eventually forming the avenue. Today, it is lined with high-end stores, cafés, and offices, perfect for shopping. Built for the Paris Opera between 1861 and 1875 at the request of Emperor Napoleon III, it was initially called the new Paris Opera but soon became known as the Palais Garnier, in honor of its lavish design by architect Charles Garnier, which exemplifies the Napoleon III style. It served as the main theatre for the Paris Opera and its associated ballet until 1989, when the Opéra Bastille opened. The Palais Garnier is now primarily used for ballet and has been a historical monument of France since 1923. 3 Arc de Triomphe The Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile is one of Paris’s most famous monuments, located at the western end of the Champs-Élysées at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle, formerly Place de l’Étoile. This juncture is formed by twelve radiating avenues and is shared by three arrondissements: the 16th (south and west), 17th (north), and 8th (east). The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, with the names of all French victories and generals inscribed on its surfaces. Beneath its vault lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I.
