Twelve streets form the shape of a star, giving the site its more common Parisian name, l’Étoile (the star). The Arc de Triomphe honors those who fought and died for France in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The names of all French victories and generals can be seen on its inner and outer surfaces. Construction was started by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806, halted during the Bourbon Restoration, and completed in 1836 by the last French King, Louis-Philippe. On 15 December 1840, Napoleon’s remains, brought from Saint Helena island, passed under the Arc de Triomphe on their way to the Hôtel des Invalides, where Napoleon Bonaparte was buried.
