An old adage states, ‘Everyone possesses two countries, their homeland, and France.’ This rang particularly true for a multitude of artists, authors, and jazz musicians who migrated to Paris between the World Wars for creative stimulation and self-discovery. This group, known as the Lost Generation, were individuals that had weathered the devastations of the First World War, a conflict that claimed the lives of 20 million. These men and women, in their twenties or thirties, saw the authority of the past as morally deficient and yearned to establish a fresh paradigm.
In their quest for intellectual exchange, they convened within the many cafés populating the Left Bank. A great number of these impoverished artists and authors resided within the district’s low-cost lodging or chilled unheated apartments. We will explore the locales where they thrived, laboured, and reveled, keeping in mind that the bohemian Left Bank, once a refuge for penniless artists and authors, has now been transformed into a hub for trendy retail outlets and upscale bistros.
