The MOST incredible tour guide in Paris!! - Violette was such an incredible tour guide for our trip to Paris. She was our tour guide for the Louvre and Versailles. Her background in art history and as a seasoned tour guide made our experience one of a kind. We would have been lost without her and I feel that we were really able to get a lot out of the museums with Voilette by our side. She was very knowledgeable about the art and buildings, told several fun stories and interesting fun facts, and was a delight to be with. I will def call Violette the next time we are in Paris and have recommended her to other already!! Thanks, Violette!

The Louvre With a PhD. - The Louvre is a fantastic museum. A few hours cannot give it justice. Still, our guide was able to give us a great appreciation of the history of the building and some good general information about how the Louvre presents its collection. We have a new understanding of the role of sculpture and painting in early religion. Our guide clearly had PhD level knowledge of the subject matter.

Louvre c'EST magnifique. Thank Ivana, Adam as and Fat Cat tours. - Don't buy from street vendors. Meet your tour group at equine statue of Louis XIV unless told specifically otherwise. Adam and Ivana at Fat Cat tours great communication with us. So spoiled by Ivana, we got into the Louvre within 5 minutes of meeting up. She loves Paris, the Louvre and the Arts. We saw everything we wanted to see as well as some hidden treasures. If you have your heart set on seeing the Mona Lisa you still can, but way less crowded to see 5 or 6 other DaVinci paintings! Aphrodite Venus also await. Educational informative and fun. Thank you again Ivana and Adam

C'EST Magnifique Merci Fat Cat tours - Only issue, meeting place was not specific enough. Contacted Fat Cat tours heard back from Adam in under 5 minutes to meet by the equine statue of Louis XIV. Ivana was there on time for tour, got us in quickly and paced the tour to our interests. She is knowledgeable and passionate about the Louvre and it shows. A guided tour is worth the money and saves soooooo much time. PS You can still get to see the Mona Lisa.

Overtly Sexualized Private Museum Tour with Mixed Age Group - I booked the private Louvre tour “Front of the Line: Everything but the Mona Lisa” with high expectations. I had taken the exact tour last year and found it outstanding educational, well-paced, and led by a phenomenal guide. Excited to share the experience with family & friends, I even asked Viator if the same guide was available (they couldn’t confirm), regardless I booked again. Our private tour included myself, my 33 y old sister, my 14 & 10 yr sons, my friend's 9 &13 yr daughters. (When booking you note everyone's ages as well) I’m well aware that the Louvre’s collection includes nudity, mythology, and mature themes; my kids are seasoned museum-goers who appreciate art & different cultures. What I expect in return is professionalism & discernment especially when minors are present. The guide asked if we were ok with nudity to which we said "yes" which we are, but this was beyond just admiring nude art and sexual themes. It was an excessive fixation on sexual content that was solely highlighted on this private mixed age group. Nothing like the tour I took last year with my adult friend. In the tapestry gallery the guide repeatedly pointed out “naughty cherubs” wrestling naked and urinating on one another. The angels were around the borders of these huge tapestries that had beautiful historical scenes. After continuously pointing out the naughty cherub angels on the fourth tapestry I politely asked him to address the actual scenes’ that were on the tapestry historical context, weaving techniques, and symbolism instead. He continually did this with almost every piece of art that had any sexual context. To the point he noticed and I kept inquiring about the artists, historical context and techniques if he could please share any of those other themes aside from what he kept fixating on. The tipping point came at "The Sleep of Endymion". The guide turned to my 14-year-old son, explaining that their were sexual perceptions of this painting. One, is that Diana is said to “fondle Endymion while he sleeps,” and the other sexual perception which he told my son to notice Eros’s “naughty look,” adding that "Eros is looking at Endymion and is going to have his way with him.” That was all that was noted of this beautiful painting, and he walked on. He could have shared with our group the use of light & shadow, or Greek mythology influence on painters, or Endymion’s symbolism of youth. I would not of cared about him addressing that their are sexual perceptions but not going into in depth detail that he did with my son. This interaction was deeply unsettling and unnecessary especially when there were so many artistic, themes he could of highlighted without singling him out. I reached out to Viator/Fat Cat Tour in regards to this deeply uncomfortable experience requesting a refund. Viator cited the guide’s 18 years of experience and said we should have booked a “children’s or family friendly tour.” They said the Louvre has world renowned art and there may be some cultural differences with guides/tours. I respectfully disagree: experience should include the ability to read the room and adapt and honestly there were so many other elements of the artwork our guide could of shared and imparted with us and the our group not just the sexual themes. I wasn’t asking for a watered-down conservative tour I just needed better discretion. Viator also noted that I left a tip. Like many travelers, I tip out of courtesy, not as an endorsement. Ultimately they offered a $95 goodwill refund on an $828.74 booking. Takeaways for Families, set clear expectations in writing. Note that nudity is acceptable but ask for age-appropriate discourse. Request a specific guide whose style suits families, if possible. Consider other operators if your concerns are dismissed. Our family enjoys nuanced cultural exploration; and art. The guide’s sole focus on sexual innuendo was intellectually shallow and unmistakably inappropriate. I share this so others can secure the enriching experience a Louvre tour should provide. Regrettably, we will not book with Viator again.

Overtly Sexual Louvre Tour, A Disappointing Family Private Tour Experience - As an avid traveler, I recently re-booked Viator’s private Louvre tour, “Front of the Line: Everything but the Mona Lisa,” with very high expectations. I had taken the identical tour last year and found it exemplary! Well-paced, intellectually rich, and led by a superb guide. Hoping to replicate that experience for our visiting family friends, I even asked Viator whether the same guide was available (they could not confirm) but, confident in the company’s standards, proceeded with the reservation. I fully appreciate that the Louvre’s collection features nudity, mythology, and other mature themes; my children are seasoned museum-goers who have traveled to museums all over, they enjoy thoughtful, nuanced discussions and are comfortable with all works of art. What I expect in return is professionalism and discernment especially when minors are present. Where the tour guide faltered- 1. Excessive fixation on sexual content In the tapestry gallery, the guide repeatedly highlighted what he termed “naughty cherubs” wrestling naked and urinating on one another. By the fourth tapestry of pointing out the "naughty angels" doing "naughty things" I politely requested that he discuss historical context, weaving techniques, or iconography instead. He continued to default to sexual commentary whenever a work allowed it, despite my repeated efforts to redirect the narrative for him to share other elements that we could learn from. 2. Inappropriate remarks to a minor The decisive breach occurred at "The Sleep of Endymion." Addressing my 14-year-old son, the guide explained that Diana “fondles Endymion while he sleeps” and urged him to observe Eros’s “naughty look,” adding that Eros might “have his way with him.” He then moved on without exploring the painting’s artistry, light and shadow, Greek myth’s influence on French painters, or Endymion’s symbolism of eternal youth. Acknowledging sexual interpretation is one thing; subjecting a minor to graphic detail is quite another especially when there were other elements to highlight from this painting but that was the main focus he chose to share. Viator’s and Fat Cat Tours response When I expressed my concerns, Viator & Fat Cat Tours cited the guide’s 18 years of experience and suggested I should have booked a “children’s or family tour.” Respectfully, experience ought to include the ability to gauge an audience and pivot. I was not seeking a sanitized/conservative tour; I was seeking judicious, educational, artistic-technical and historical, context and commentary not solely our tour guide's sexual perception of the art works. Viator also noted that I left a tip something I do out of courtesy, not endorsement. In the end, they offered a $95 goodwill refund against an $828.74 charge. Advice for families Private museum tours can be invaluable, but this experience illustrates that tone, situational awareness, and respect for the audience are as crucial as subject expertise. If you are traveling with teens or younger children: Set explicit expectations in writing beforehand. (We confirmed comfort with nudity; however we did not invite overtly explicit sexual detail which was what we received throughout the entire three hours) Request a family guide by name, if possible. Consider alternative operators if initial concerns are deflected. Our family values art and intellectual engagement, and we relish nuanced cultural perspectives. Yet the guide’s commentary landed on such a discordant, overtly sexual register that its inappropriateness was unmistakable. I share this review so other travelers can secure the enriching, educational experience a Louvre tour should provide. Nonetheless, we will not be booking through Viator again.
