Peperpot is a historic coffee and cocoa plantation situated in Commewijne, across the Suriname River from Paramaribo. To reach it from Paramaribo, one can cycle over the Plattebrug and take a tent boat to Meerzorg. Along the journey, there is an opportunity to stop at local fruit and vegetable stalls, where visitors can soak in the district’s ambiance and purchase fresh produce. The tour also includes a lunch break.
The plantation was founded in the early 19th century and continued operations until 1996. Several historic buildings remain on the site, such as plantation houses, a coffee barn, and the former coffee and cocoa factory. Among the old coffee and cocoa trees, bromeliads and orchids now thrive.
Peperpot is a favorite spot for birdwatchers, and with some luck, visitors might also see monkeys and sapakaras. After the guided tour, participants cycle back to Meerzorg to catch the boat back to Paramaribo.
