Island Hopping in San Blas: A Surfer’s Paradise

When the call of the San Blas Islands reached my ears, I knew it was time to trade the surfboard for a snorkel and explore this untouched paradise. Join me as I recount a four-day adventure through Panama’s stunning archipelago, where simplicity and beauty reign supreme.

Setting Sail to San Blas

The allure of the San Blas Islands had been calling my name for quite some time. As a professional surfer, I’ve spent countless days chasing waves across Central America, but the promise of a four-day island-hopping adventure in Panama was too tempting to resist. My wife, ever the adventurer, was just as eager to explore this paradise. We packed our bags, leaving behind the comforts of modern life, and set off for a journey that promised both beauty and simplicity.

The journey from Panama City to Carti Port was an adventure in itself. The drive was long, about three and a half hours, with a mix of smooth roads and bumpy terrain. If you’re prone to motion sickness, I highly recommend taking some Dramamine. As we arrived at the port, the anticipation was palpable. We were about to embark on a journey through the pristine waters of the San Blas Islands, a place where time seemed to stand still.

Island Life: A Step Back in Time

Our first night was spent on Aroma Island, and it was a stark reminder of how far removed we were from the hustle and bustle of city life. The accommodations were basic, with huts featuring dirt floors and simple beds. For those accustomed to air conditioning and plush towels, it was a bit of a shock. But as the sun set and the stars began to twinkle above, the island’s charm became undeniable. My wife and I, along with our fellow travelers, embraced the simplicity and found joy in the experience.

The following day, we moved to Aguca Island, where the accommodations were a step up. The above-ground lodging offered a bit more comfort, and the island itself was a delight to explore. We spent our days snorkeling in crystal-clear waters, discovering vibrant coral reefs, and visiting the native islands. The Kuna people, who call these islands home, were warm and welcoming, sharing their culture and traditions with us.

Embracing the Adventure

Our final night was spent on Perro Chico, where the addition of electricity and fans made for a more comfortable sleep. The island was a treasure trove of activities, from exploring a sunken ship to lounging on the beach. The food throughout our journey was simple yet delicious, with fresh seafood being a staple. We supplemented our meals with snacks we brought from the mainland, a tip I highly recommend for future travelers.

As our adventure came to an end, I couldn’t help but reflect on the beauty and simplicity of the San Blas Islands. It was a journey that took us back in time, away from the distractions of modern life, and allowed us to connect with nature and each other. For those seeking a unique and unforgettable experience, the San Blas Islands are a must-visit destination. Just remember to pack light, bring a waterproof bag, and embrace the adventure that awaits.
