Exploring Panama City’s Hidden Historical Gems

Trading my surfboard for a pair of walking shoes, I embarked on a journey through Panama City’s rich history. From the ancient ruins of Panama La Vieja to the vibrant cultural tapestry of Mi Pueblito, this tour was a refreshing dive into the stories of the past.

A Stroll Through Time: Panama La Vieja

As a surfer, I’m always chasing the perfect wave, but this time, I found myself chasing history in the heart of Panama City. The first stop on my journey was Panama La Vieja, a place that whispers tales of the past with every stone and shadow. Walking through the ruins of the first city founded by Spaniards on the Pacific coast, I felt a connection to the stories of old explorers and settlers. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is a testament to the resilience and spirit of those who came before us.

The guide, a fountain of knowledge, painted vivid pictures of the city’s past, from its pre-Hispanic inhabitants to the colonial era. As I climbed the Tower of the Cathedral, the panoramic views of the old capital were breathtaking. It was a moment of reflection, a pause in my usual sun-soaked adventures, to appreciate the rich tapestry of history that Panama City offers.

Cultural Tapestry at Mi Pueblito

Next, I ventured to Mi Pueblito, a vibrant showcase of Panama’s diverse cultural heritage. This tourist center is a living museum, offering a glimpse into the lives and traditions of Panama’s main ethnic groups. The Afroantillana Plaza, with its colorful houses and the iconic Muller House, felt like stepping into a different era. The sea breeze carried the sounds of laughter and music, a reminder of the lively spirit that defines this place.

Though the Plaza Interiorana was under rehabilitation, the Pollera Museum was a highlight, showcasing the intricate and beautiful traditional dresses. The cobbled streets and wooden houses transported me to a simpler time, where community and culture thrived. Mi Pueblito is more than just a tourist spot; it’s a celebration of Panama’s roots and a reminder of the beauty in diversity.

The Colonial Charm of San Felipe

The final leg of my historical journey took me to San Felipe, a district that oozes colonial charm. Walking through its streets, I was transported back to a time when the Spanish Crown held sway over the region. The colonial square, with its grand architecture and historical significance, was a sight to behold.

As I wandered through the narrow streets, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for a time I never knew. The guide’s stories of the past brought the city to life, making history feel tangible and real. San Felipe is a place where the past and present coexist, offering a unique glimpse into Panama’s storied history.

This tour was a departure from my usual surf-centric adventures, but it was a journey worth taking. Panama City, with its rich history and vibrant culture, is a destination that offers more than just waves. It’s a place where stories of the past come alive, inviting you to explore and discover.
