- Pamukkale - The ancient city of Hierapolis is situated on a 200-meter-high terrace of limestone deposits, surrounded by a stunning landscape of mineral water pools and petrified limestone waterfalls. This historic city overlooks the contemporary town of Pamukkale in Turkey’s Inner Aegean region. Established as a thermal spa in 190 BC by Eumenes II, the King of Pergamon, the city was likely named after Hiero, the wife of the legendary founder of the Pergamene dynasty.
- Pamukkale Tiyatrosu - Located centrally in Hierapolis, this theater is remarkably well-preserved. It was constructed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. During Emperor Severus’ era, the cavea and stage of the theater were restored using remnants from an older theater previously built to the north of the city. The Roman Theatre could accommodate 8,500 to 10,000 spectators and was divided into upper and lower seating sections by a diazoma.
- Hierapolis Apollon Tapınağı - Positioned on the main street between the theater and a sacred pool, this forty-by-sixty-foot temple was dedicated to Apollo, the supposed god of light. The entrance faced west and was accessed by a wide flight of stairs.
- Pamukkale Thermal Pools - The surreal, brilliant white travertine terraces and warm, clear pools of Pamukkale cascade like a petrified waterfall from the edge of a steep valley in Turkey’s picturesque southwest. Truly spectacular on its own, the geological marvel of Pamukkale, meaning “Cotton Castle” in Turkish, is also home to the remarkably preserved ruins of the Greek-Roman city of Hierapolis. With such a unique blend of natural and historical wonders, it’s no surprise that Pamukkale-Hierapolis is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Attracting over two million visitors annually, it stands as Turkey’s most visited attraction.
