- Pamukkale - The ancient city of Hierapolis is situated on a 200-meter-high terrace of limestone deposits, surrounded by a stunning landscape of mineral water pools and petrified limestone waterfalls. This historic city overlooks the contemporary town of Pamukkale in Turkey’s Inner Aegean region. Established as a thermal spa in 190 BC by Eumenes II, the King of Pergamon, the city was likely named after Hiero, the wife of the legendary founder of the Pergamene dynasty.
- Pamukkale Tiyatrosu - Located in the heart of Hierapolis, this well-preserved theater was constructed during the reign of Emperor Hadrian in the 2nd century AD. During Emperor Severus’ era, the cavea and stage of the theater were restored using remnants from an older theater previously built to the north of the city. The Roman Theatre could accommodate 8,500 to 10,000 spectators and was divided into upper and lower seating sections by a diazoma.
- Hierapolis Apollon Tapınağı - Situated on the main street between the theater and a sacred pool, this forty-by-sixty-foot temple was dedicated to Apollo, the supposed god of light. The entrance faced west and was accessed by a wide flight of stairs.
- Pamukkale Thermal Pools - Pamukkale is renowned for its dazzling white calcite travertines (terraces) that overflow with warm, mineral-rich waters on the mountain above the village, known as the ‘Cotton Castle’ (pamuk means ‘cotton’ in Turkish). Just above the travertines lies Hierapolis, once a Roman and Byzantine spa city, which boasts significant ruins and a museum.
