- Arch Rock Nature Trail - The 30-foot granite Arch Rock is a must-see spot in Joshua Tree National Park. A short hike leads to this natural arch amidst the granite formations near White Tank Campground.
While it’s beautiful at any time, visiting at sunset offers a perfect photo opportunity: a magnificent thirty-foot granite span under a pastel sky. The hike to the arch is a simple 1.4-mile round trip, and it’s recommended to also visit Heart Rock. Despite its slightly uneven shape, this formation truly resembles a heart and is a popular spot for photos with loved ones.
- Barker Dam Trail - Barker Dam, a natural basin enhanced in 1902 for cattle ranchers’ water storage, offers stunning scenery, short interpretive nature trails, and historical significance.
The Barker Dam trail is a 1.3-mile nature loop featuring easy scrambling and interpretive panels. It skirts the southern edge of the backcountry area known as the Wonderland of Rocks. Although not a true dam, it is a natural basin walled in 1902 to improve water storage for cattle ranchers. Regardless, it’s a beautiful sight.
- Cholla Cactus Garden - The Cholla Cactus Garden is one of the most surreal attractions in Joshua Tree National Park, with hundreds of cacti that appear furry, shining silver and gold in the fading light.
The sight of hundreds of teddy bear cacti glowing softly in the sunlight is not to be missed. While they may appear fuzzy from afar, these plants are not related to teddy bears: their furry look is due to the dense spines covering the stems. Caution is advised - they are lovely to look at, but touching them, especially accidentally, is not recommended.
- Hall of Horrors - Hall of Horrors is a popular spot with several rock formations accessible via dirt paths, ideal for scrambling and rock climbing. This area is surrounded by mountains and offers many scenic views.
The namesake hall is a fun photo opportunity for those comfortable with some rock scrambling and is accessed by circling around the right side of the first formation visible. The narrow dark corridor, or hall, is hidden in the second formation back from the road, requiring exploration and a sense of adventure to find - but it’s worth it.
- Hidden Valley - Hidden Valley Nature Trail is an easy one-mile loop through Hidden Valley on a dirt and rock trail. This is a favored hike through a rock-enclosed valley surrounded by unique rock formations.
A one-mile loop guides visitors through this small valley encircled by giant buttresses and granite domes. It was secluded enough to serve as a hideout for the McHaney Gang, outlaws, and cattle rustlers active in the 1870s and ‘80s.
- Keys View - Keys View is a popular viewpoint perched on the crest of the Little San Bernardino Mountains, offering panoramic views of the Coachella Valley.
A ten-minute drive ascends to an elevation of 5,185 feet, the highest road in the park. From here, visitors can see the entire Coachella Valley, from the San Andreas Fault and distant Salton Sea to Palm Springs and the snowcapped peaks of San Jacinto Peak and Mount San Gorgonio. A spectacular view not to be missed.
- Skull Rock - Skull Rock is a popular stop in the park, featuring a rock that resembles a giant skull.
As more rock eroded, more water accumulated, leading to further erosion until, over time, two hollowed-out eye sockets formed, and the rock began to resemble a skull. From different angles and when the sun shines at varying levels, the skull’s appearance and mood change.
- Split Rock - Split Rock is a massive boulder split in two, with a pleasant short hike to the rock and a lovely picnic area to enjoy. Imagine the forces that caused the boulder to split!
