- Cattedrale di Palermo - The Cathedral of Palermo is a significant monument within the “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale” site, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2015.
The Cathedral of Palermo was established by Gualtiero Offamilio, the town’s archbishop from 1169 to 1190. Originally a mosque during Islamic times, it was transformed into a cathedral by Roberto the Guiscardo following the conquest of Palermo. Its distinctive features include inlays and architectural and sculptural elements that reflect the influence of Romanesque art and early Gothic decorative styles in Sicily.
- Cassaro Alto - Known as the oldest street in Palermo, it was called Via Toledo from the 16th century. After Italy’s unification, it was renamed Via Vittorio Emanuele II, though the original name remains in use.
- Quattro Canti - Also known as Vigliena Square, this octagonal square is located at the intersection of Palermo’s two main streets: Via Maqueda and Cassaro (Corso Vittorio Emanuele). Historical sources refer to it as the “Octagon” or “Sun’s Theatre,” as sunlight illuminates one of its façades throughout the day. Constructed between 1609 and 1620, the square serves as a central point connecting the four major districts of that era: Kalsa, La Loggia, Capo, and Albergheria. The four façades feature different levels: the lowest displays fountains symbolizing Palermo’s four main rivers—Oreto, Kemonia, Pannaria, and Papireto; the next level showcases allegories of the four seasons represented by Eolo, Venus, Cerere, and Bacchus; the middle section is adorned with statues of Carlo V, Filippo II, Filippo III, and Filippo IV; and the top level illustrates the four saints of Palermo before Saint Rosalia’s arrival in 1624: Agata, Ninfa, Oliva, and Cristina.
