Setting Sail into Serenity

The allure of the La Maddalena Archipelago had been calling to me for quite some time. As a marine biologist, the promise of exploring these pristine waters and learning the basics of sailing was irresistible. The day began with a gentle breeze as I arrived at the Porto Turistico Palau, where I was warmly greeted by Inna and Yuri, our hosts for the day. Their sailboat, a comfortable and well-equipped vessel, awaited us just offshore. A quick ride on a dinghy brought us to the boat, where I joined three other couples, all eager to embark on this intimate adventure.

The first leg of our journey took us to Cala di Santa Maria. As we sailed, Yuri shared his extensive knowledge of the area, pointing out various islands and their unique features. The turquoise waters of Cala di Santa Maria were a sight to behold, and I couldn’t resist diving in for a swim. We spent two hours here, taking a dinghy to the shore and walking along the beach, marveling at the unique hue of the sand.

Our final stop was Cala Granara on Isola Spargi. Here, we had the freedom to swim from the deck, snorkel, and enjoy more time on the paddleboard. The underwater world was teeming with life, and I was thrilled to spot several species of fish and coral that I had studied in my work. The tranquility of the water and the beauty of the surroundings made it a perfect end to our sailing adventure.

As we sailed back to Palau, I reflected on the day’s experiences. The combination of learning the basics of sailing, exploring idyllic locations, and connecting with fellow travelers made this trip truly special.
