Separated from Razzoli Island by a narrow canal called Passo degli Asinelli (Donkey’s Pass) on the east, and another smaller canal, Passo dello Strangolato (Strangled Pass), on the north, it is often considered part of Santa Maria’s territory. The southern side features Santa Maria Bay, home to a stunning fine white sand beach, the longest in the archipelago. The beach’s name comes from the pink sand at Cala di Roto, created by the dispersion of Miniacina miniacea fragments, a pink microorganism, upon the death of the organisms inhabiting the shells formed by this microorganism.

Captain Nelson, the British hero who defeated Napoleon’s fleet between 1803 and 1805, gifted candlesticks and a crucifix to the citizens, now preserved in the diocesan museum inside the Parish Church of St. Maria Maddalena.
