  Established by the Greeks around 600 BC, it was originally named Poseidonia in honor of Poseidon, or Neptune, the god of the sea, to whom the city was dedicated. Between 400 and 273 BC, it was inhabited by the Italic Lucanian people. In 273 BC, it became a Roman colony known as Paestum.

The three grand temples at Paestum were constructed following the principles of the Doric order. The Greeks were also knowledgeable about the Ionic and Corinthian orders.
