Often called ‘one of the world’s great streets’, it offers the chance to capture stunning scenery and explore the colleges and more.
- University Church of St. Mary the Virgin - This Anglican church is celebrated for its graceful spire, considered one of the most beautiful in England. The spire is adorned with gargoyles and statues, and some of the church’s stained glass windows date back to the Renaissance.
Established over 500 years ago, the church was the location of the heresy trials for the Oxford Martyrs in 1555. Visitors can discover Cranmer’s Pillar, which honors the martyrs of the Reformation.
- All Souls College - Officially named the College of the Souls of All the Faithful Departed, this college was established by King Henry VI in 1483.
Interestingly, it has no undergraduates today. The college focuses on research with a few examination fellowships each academic year. Admission is extremely competitive, requiring candidates to take what is known as the ‘hardest exam in the world’.
- Radcliffe Camera - Visit one of the city’s iconic symbols, the Radcliffe Camera. It is named after the physician John Radcliffe and the Latin word ‘camera’, meaning ‘room’. This 250-year-old structure serves as a reading room for the nearby Bodleian.
- Bodleian Library - The Bodleian Library, over 400 years old, is one of Europe’s oldest libraries. Founded by Sir Thomas Bodley, its world-renowned collection includes a copy of the Magna Carta, a Gutenberg Bible, and a first edition of Don Quixote.
As you admire the Bodleian, you might hear scholars refer to it as ‘the Bodley’ or simply ‘the Bod’.
- Bridge of Sighs - Don’t miss capturing a photo of this remarkable landmark, one of Oxford’s most beloved sights.
This famous skyway, also known as the Hertford Bridge, connects the old and new Quadrangles of Hertford College. Named after the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, it is not open to the public, but college students frequently cross it.
- Hertford College - This college was notably the first of Oxford’s all-male colleges to admit female students in 1974. The iconic Bridge of Sighs connects two of the college’s buildings for student passage.
Its coat of arms features a hart’s head (a male red deer) and a Templar cross.
- University of Oxford - Walk past the University of Oxford, one of the world’s oldest universities and the oldest in the English-speaking world. Founded over 900 years ago, it is highly sought after by students worldwide.

- History of Science Museum - Founded in 1683, the History of Science Museum is the world’s first and oldest purpose-built museum.
The museum houses an impressive array of astronomical instruments, scientific artifacts, and more, including Einstein’s blackboard.
- Sheldonian Theatre - Designed by Sir Christopher Wren, one of England’s most renowned architects, the Sheldonian Theatre is a must-visit for any traveler. Its geometric roof was a groundbreaking achievement of Early Modern architecture in the 17th century, featuring an eight-sided cupola at its center.
Today, the theatre is primarily used for concerts, lectures, and ceremonies.
- University College - Established in 1249, University College is the oldest college of the University of Oxford. It is often called the ‘friendliest college’ due to its relatively small grounds and community atmosphere.
Locally known as ‘Univ’, some of its notable alumni include US President Bill Clinton, Stephen Hawking, and C.S. Lewis.
