March Winds in Oxfordshire: A Historic Journey Through Time

Experience the breezy charm of Oxfordshire this March with historic tours that unveil the city’s rich past. Despite the overcast skies, the moderate winds add a touch of drama to your exploration, making it a perfect time to discover Oxford’s iconic landmarks and hidden gems.

Embracing Oxford’s Historic Charm

As the March winds sweep through Oxfordshire, there’s no better time to delve into the rich tapestry of history and culture that this iconic city offers. With the weather being predominantly overcast on March 8th, the city presents a perfect backdrop for a day of exploration. The moderate winds, though brisk, add a touch of drama to the ancient streets and storied buildings.

Start your journey with the Oxford City Exploration tour, available in the morning. This self-guided audio tour allows you to wander at your own pace, uncovering the secrets of the University of Oxford and its historic surroundings. As you stroll through Radcliffe Square and the Bodleian Library, imagine the countless scholars who have walked these paths before you. The tour’s flexibility is perfect for a day when the weather might shift, allowing you to pause and seek shelter in one of Oxford’s many charming cafes if needed.

Review (2023-12-31): Informative and entertaining - Solid information, presented in a pleasant way. Directions sufficiently clear. Recommended.

A Day of Discovery and Delight

On March 9th, the weather shifts slightly, offering partly cloudy skies and a touch more warmth. This is an ideal day to continue your exploration with the Oxford Walking Tours available in the morning and afternoon. These guided tours provide a deeper dive into the city’s architectural marvels and historical pubs.

Begin your day with a visit to the Ashmolean Museum, the oldest public museum in the world, and marvel at its vast collection of art and antiquities. As you wander through the High Street, take in the bustling atmosphere and the stunning Gothic and Baroque architecture that defines Oxford. The tour’s flexibility allows you to join different segments throughout the day, ensuring you can tailor your experience to your interests and the weather.

Review (2025-01-15): Guided walking tour of Oxford University Colleges - We took a walking tour of Oxford University Colleges from the outside. We were guided by Leo. Our party of 3 were very fortunate to have him to ourselves for the duration of the 90 minute tour. He was exceptionally knowledgeable as he had studied for 2 degrees at the University. He was great at answering all our questions and showing us many things of interest. We thoroughly enjoyed this guided tour.

Uncovering Hidden Gems

As the day progresses, take the opportunity to explore some of Oxford’s lesser-known treasures. The city’s historic pubs, such as The Bear Inn and Turf Tavern, offer a cozy retreat from the brisk winds. These establishments are steeped in history, having hosted many famous personalities over the years. Enjoy a pint and soak in the stories that echo through their walls.

For those with a penchant for literature, a visit to Blackwell’s Bookshop is a must. This iconic literary haven is a delight for bookworms and offers a chance to escape into the world of words. As you browse the shelves, consider the countless authors and scholars who have found inspiration within these walls.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply seeking a unique cultural experience, Oxfordshire in March offers a captivating blend of past and present. The city’s rich history, combined with its vibrant modern culture, ensures that every visitor leaves with a story to tell.
