The Cango Caves - Conclude the day by traveling through rugged plains and towering cliffs to reach Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world, located in the semi-desert Klein Karoo.

Oudtshoorn - Spend the evening at leisure in the charming town of Oudtshoorn. Your guide can assist in booking a restaurant or joining the backpacker’s group to sample local specialties, such as ostrich “sosaties” (kebabs) and “pot brood” (bread cooked over open flames) at an optional ‘braai’ barbecue experience for an additional cost. Relax in the evening at your accommodation by a crackling fire or under the vast, twinkling starry sky.

Oudtshoorn - Cango Caves - Addo

Oudtshoorn - (Travel route today: approximately 400 km / 5 hours driving)
Awake in Oudtshoorn, where ostriches are prominent. If you haven’t noticed from the bird-filled paddocks and farms along the highway or the colorful feather stalls on the way to the town center, you will from the numerous show farm signs and the grand sandstone homesteads reminiscent of a time when ostrich feathers were more valuable than gold.

The Cango Caves - Head to the mountains to explore the magical Cango Caves’ limestone chambers, adorned with drip formation stalactites and stalagmites and remnants of Khoikhoi paintings. Opt for the easy-going Heritage Tour to test the cave’s acoustics and gain insights from your guide about the formation and dripstone evolution. Alternatively, the Adventure Tour (if available) offers a more daring experience, allowing participants to squeeze, twist, and wiggle through limestone chimneys on a more adventurous underground route.

On your way to the next stop, travel through Karoo country to a charming small-town gem. Visit a delightful “padstal”-inspired restaurant and enjoy a special local-treats-taster menu, handmade with love, featuring traditional dishes like “bobotie”, “roosterbrood”, “koeksisters”, and “melktert”. Addo - As you journey to the renowned Greater Addo Region, the dusty plains of the Klein Karoo transform into a lush horizon. This small citrus farming community is nestled in the Sundays River Valley, surrounded by the Zuurberg Mountains, offering spectacular hiking and game viewing in a malaria-free area. Tonight, stay overnight near Addo National Park, making it convenient to embark on a safari first thing in the morning.

Note that guesthouse accommodations are typically located away from the bustling backpackers, sometimes requiring a 15 to 30-minute drive.

Addo Elephant National Park - Jeffreys Bay

Addo Elephant National Park - (Travel route today: approximately 300 km / 4 hours driving)

Rise early for the opportunity to encounter some of Africa’s Big Five at Addo Elephant National Park. Your guide will utilize local expertise to locate the park’s big game animals while skillfully navigating the network of dusty roads in search of some of the Big Five animals.

Enjoy an included 2-hour game drive in the tour bus. The original elephant section of the park was established to provide a sanctuary for the few wild elephants that survived government-sponsored culling in the early 20th century. The lush vegetation offers protection and a rich food source, supporting what is now the most densely populated area of wild elephants on the planet. This well-balanced ecosystem is home to over 550 elephants, lions, buffalo, black rhino, spotted hyena, leopard, various antelope, zebra, and other species.

Jeffreys Bay - The early morning start allows for free time in the afternoon, and J’Bay’s surf shop village – with its discount outlets – is ideal for shopping enthusiasts. If you’ve always wanted to learn to surf (optional activity at your own expense), this town or the nearby sand slopes are perfect for trying surfing or horseback riding on the beach (optional activity at your own expense) or simply relaxing on the beach. Surfboards and wetsuits can be rented for an additional fee.

Conclude the day with dinner at the backpackers’ accommodation or enjoy a night out at a local seafood restaurant, listening to the soothing sounds of the waves lapping against the shore.

Bloukrans Bridge - After breakfast, head to the coastal forest region of the Garden Route.

Tsitsikamma National Park - For a more relaxed thrill, consider the optional Waterfall Ziplining through dramatic scenery and over waterfalls in the nearby Tsitsikamma forest. Complete about five individual slides, zip over three waterfalls, and slide down one impressive gorge.

Garden Route (Tsitsikamma, Knysna, Wilderness) National Park - This region is an outdoor playground, and for those who prefer to keep their feet on solid ground, a visit to the lush forests of the Tsitsikamma National Park is sure to provide your essential forest fix.
