Sailing Through Time: A Journey to Scandola’s Volcanic Wonders
Drawn by the allure of volcanic wonders and the promise of a leisurely boat tour, I set sail from Porto to explore the Scandola Nature Reserve. Join me as I recount the breathtaking landscapes and serene moments that made this journey unforgettable.
Setting Sail from Porto
As I embarked on the Scandola Boat Tour from the charming port of Porto, I was immediately enveloped by a sense of nostalgia. The gentle rocking of the Mare Nostrum II beneath my feet reminded me of the rhythmic sway of a train carriage, a sensation I have always cherished. The boat, neither too large nor too small, was just the right size for a leisurely exploration of the volcanic wonders that lay ahead. Our guide, Jean-Baptiste Rostini, a native of the region, exuded a warmth and familiarity that made me feel as though I was in the company of an old friend.
The journey began with a gentle cruise along the coastline, the sun casting a golden hue over the rugged cliffs. As we approached the Scandola Nature Reserve, the landscape transformed into a dramatic tapestry of volcanic and granitic formations. The sight was nothing short of breathtaking, each anfractuosity and cove telling a story of the earth’s ancient past. It was a reminder of the timeless beauty that nature holds, much like the scenic routes I often traverse by rail.
Navigating the Calanques
Our skipper, with the precision of a seasoned conductor, guided the boat into the narrow passages of the Calanques. It was a feat of millimetre work, akin to threading a needle, and I watched in awe as we glided effortlessly through the caves. The experience was both thrilling and serene, a perfect harmony of adventure and tranquility.
As we continued our journey, the live commentary provided by Jean-Baptiste enriched the experience, offering insights into the geological wonders that surrounded us. His passion for the region was palpable, and it was easy to see why he had dedicated his life to sharing its beauty with others. The boat was equipped with all the comforts one could desire, including shade and a toilet, ensuring a pleasant journey for all aboard.
A Pause in Time
Our voyage included a stop in the quaint village of Girolata, accessible only by boat or a challenging hike. The village, with its rustic charm and tranquil ambiance, felt like a step back in time. As I wandered through its narrow streets, I couldn’t help but draw parallels to the small, picturesque towns I often encounter on my train journeys across Europe.
The brief pause in Girolata was a welcome respite, allowing us to stretch our legs and soak in the serene surroundings. In the summer months, a refreshing swim in a secluded cove is offered, though on this particular day, the weather was not in our favor. Nevertheless, the experience was delightful, a reminder of the simple pleasures that travel can bring.
As we made our way back to Porto, I reflected on the day’s adventure. The Scandola Boat Tour had been a journey of discovery, a celebration of nature’s artistry, and a testament to the joy of slow travel. Much like my beloved train journeys, it was an experience that lingered in the heart, a memory to be cherished long after the journey’s end.
