Historically, the Roman city of Ostia was located at the Tiber River’s mouth, approximately 30 kilometers west of Rome. Over time, from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, the shoreline extended seaward due to silting. As a result, Ostia remains adjacent to the Tiber but is now about three kilometers from the coast.
