- Duomo di Orvieto - Located less than a two-hour drive away, Orvieto was a significant Etruscan City-State. The city has a fascinating history that stretches back millions of years. The formation of the Orvieto rock is likely the result of an ancient volcanic eruption. It is believed that the current rock, upon which Orvieto is built, is one of the massive tufa rock formations ejected from the large crater now known as Bolsena Lake. The Etruscans inhabited Orvieto until the 3rd Century BC, after which the Romans invaded. It took the Romans two years to conquer Orvieto, a natural fortress surrounded by cliffs. The Etruscans had created an intricate network of caves and numerous wells to defend Orvieto for an extended period. Besides being renowned for its exquisite cuisine, such as truffles, the city features an extraordinary Gothic Cathedral with a frescoed “Last Judgment” that rivals Michelangelo’s, a labyrinth of ancient underground passages, and St. Patrick’s Well.
- Pozzo di San Patrizio - In 1527, during the “Sack of Rome,” Pope Clement VII sought refuge in Orvieto. He commissioned Antonio da Sangallo the Younger to construct the well to ensure a water supply in case of a siege. Sangallo, who had already worked on the city’s fortifications, drew inspiration from the spiral of the Belvedere in the Vatican. He designed an ingenious system of two spiral staircases that never intersect, allowing access to and from the well (approximately 53 meters deep) without any traffic issues. Today, it is a true delight to descend into its depths along the more than two hundred steps.
