• Duomo di Orvieto - This 13th-century Gothic cathedral is among Italy’s most remarkable attractions. Visitors will explore only the exterior, which offers a diverse array of subjects, materials, and textures for photographers. It features medieval bas-reliefs depicting the Creation, Heaven, and Hell, along with mosaics, alabaster windows, and more. It is an excellent subject for a photo essay or a captivating blog post.
• Pozzo di San Patrizio - This is an optional visit. The 16th-century well is 50 meters deep with steep, winding steps, providing a bit of exercise. However, the experience is truly rewarding. As one descends, the changing light and increasing darkness (despite electric lighting) present a challenge for photographers. A tripod, which can be provided, will enhance the experience. At the bottom, a bridge over the water offers a unique view up the spiral shaft to the surface.
• Torre del Moro - Located at the crossroads in the heart of the old city, this ancient clock tower is where the tour begins. As an option, participants can climb the 50-meter tower to enjoy a splendid view from the top.
• Chiesa San Giovenale - One of Orvieto’s oldest churches, San Giovenale, is perched on a precipice at the city’s far west. From here, there is a stunning view across the valley towards Tuscany and Latium. In 1828, William Turner painted his famous ‘View of Orvieto’ from the opposite hill, a view that remains largely unchanged. The church’s interior is adorned with exceptionally vivid medieval frescoes.
• Piazza del Popolo - This large square, the ancient heart of Orvieto, is surrounded by some of the oldest buildings. Historically, it was the seat of civil administration in the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. Twice a week, a lively market sets up until around noon, offering photographers the chance to capture the wonderfully weathered faces of the stallholders, reminiscent of a Bruegel painting.

Among the Italian hill towns, Orvieto stands out as particularly photogenic and easy to explore on foot. The town is mostly pedestrian-friendly and flat, making it simple to navigate. Its medieval streets and alleys are lined with both grand palaces and charming, modest homes. Orvieto is full of delightful surprises: turn a corner to discover the majestic Gothic facade of the cathedral, find a Renaissance courtyard at the end of an alley, or stumble upon the entrance to an ancient Etruscan tomb.
