From Rain to Sunshine: Our Family’s Manatee Adventure at Blue Spring State Park
When the weather threw a curveball at our family manatee tour, we didn’t let it dampen our spirits. Join me as I recount our adventure at Blue Spring State Park, where we encountered not just manatees, but a whole host of wildlife, making for an unforgettable family outing.
A Rainy Start and a Sunny Surprise
Our family adventure to Blue Spring State Park began with a bit of a hiccup. We had originally planned to embark on our manatee encounter on a Saturday morning, but Mother Nature had other plans. The skies were gray, and a light drizzle quickly turned into a downpour, complete with lightning. Safety first, of course, so our tour was cut short after just 40 minutes on the water. But, as any seasoned traveler knows, flexibility is key! We reached out to the tour owner, who graciously added us to the next morning’s tour.
Sunday greeted us with a gentle drizzle, but the weather soon cleared, revealing a perfect day for kayaking. The kids were thrilled, and I was relieved that our adventure was back on track. Our guide was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly patient, allowing us to paddle at our own pace. This was especially appreciated by my youngest, who was still getting the hang of maneuvering his kayak.
Manatees and More: A Wildlife Wonderland
As we paddled into the park, the anticipation of spotting manatees was palpable. Our guide explained that the manatees tend to gather in the spring area when the river temperatures drop. However, with the recent warm weather, they were more dispersed. We managed to catch glimpses of a few manatees, their snouts breaking the water’s surface for air. It was a magical sight, even if the numbers weren’t as high as they had been the previous week.
But the manatees were just the beginning. The park was teeming with wildlife! We spotted several alligators lounging on the banks, turtles sunning themselves, and a variety of birds fishing in the river. The kids were particularly fascinated by the alligators, and I was grateful for the stable sit-on-top kayaks that kept us safely above the water.
Tips for a Smooth Adventure
Before heading to the park, we made a quick stop at Valentine Park to use the restroom facilities. It’s a handy tip for families, as the facilities at the park can be a bit of a trek from the launch site. We also packed rain gear, just in case, but thankfully, we didn’t need it. However, I would recommend bringing a waterproof camera or a protective case for your phone, as the splashes from paddling can get your gear wet.
Overall, our Manatee Encounter was a delightful experience, filled with laughter, learning, and a touch of adventure. It’s a reminder that sometimes the best memories are made when things don’t go exactly as planned. So, if you’re considering a trip to Blue Spring State Park, embrace the unexpected and enjoy the ride!
