We had booked a sunrise photo tour with Carl, however as we were getting ready we could see that there was't going to be much chance of light at sunrise. On meeting Carl in the hotel he confirmed our thoughts, so he kindly suggested we rearrange our tour for that evening. Carl took us to some great places that we would have otherwise not been able to go without a guide. He even kindly backtracked to pick up my tripod which I stupidly left behind at one stop. As I photography guide myself in Scotland I appreciated Carl's local knowledge of where was best to be at the right time.
This is our second time with Phillips Photography, the last time was 10 years ago. Really enjoyed our time with Tule and enjoyed his stories. Anyone who wants some great Pictures the first time out, use these guys because they know all the right spots.
Carl was a great guide and went above and beyond to try and ensure that I got the sort of shots that I was after. The weather gods were against us a bit but I still have some great photos. Highly recommend this company.
Tooley was great as always. I’ll be back.
Very educational & interesting tour with beautiful sights !We thoroughly enjoyed it !
Harry showed me several new tricks and different ways of thinking about photographing landscapes. An excellent experience!
Tully was a great guide.
Our guide was terrific! We took the sunrise tour and entered the valley before sunrise. He took us to the Totem Pole where we set up and wait for the sun to come up. The color change was fantastic and from that spot we were able to capture sensational shots in three directions. From there we visited the Eye and Ear for more opportunities. Thank you!

Scheduled for the Sunrise Tour, we awoke to very thick cloud cover over the valley. We met Carl and he suggested that, if possible, we reschedule for the next day. Carl made it all so easy to switch days. The next morning we met Carl and our tour leader Tule and off we went. Fantastic tour, at the Totem Pole for sunrise then off to the backcountry for a look at Monument Valley from a personal perspective, well off the open road through the valley. Great photography, an unforgettable experience.
Our guide, Tuley was great. We were taken to beautiful spots and he new when and where to be to make beautiful images.
Carl and Tully were great guides. Very helpful and provided interesting cultural information about the Valley and local residents/customs.. The Phillips tours are much better than the typical "open air" vehicles that take tourists through Monument Valley. They use comfortable GM Suburbans or Tahoes that are air conditioned and well equipped. This is the way to go in Monument Valley!
It was a challenging morning for photography with the skies largely overcast. Tuly (sp?) did a very nice job finding us some good vantage points and making suggestions about how to increase the complexity of our photos. Definitely worth the trip! I'll do it again.
We took the Monument Valley Sunrise Tour and the Mystery Valley Sunset Tour with Carl Phillips. Both were excellent. Carl's knowledge of the area, which includes locations originally discovered by his father, also a guide, yielded some spectacular results. Monument Valley is incredible on its own merits, but traveling with Carl took it to the next level and beyond. These were some of the best, if not the best, photography tours that we have taken. It is highly recommended for both photographers and non-photographers. We look forward to returning to Monument Valley and touring again with Carl.
Fantastic sunrise tour. Carl obviously knows and loves the landscape. He takes you to locations not open to the general public without a guide. He is very patient and helpful with technical suggestions. A highlight was hearing him quietly sing in the Big Hogan. I hope to return.
This tour was outstanding! The sites were wonderful and varied. The sunrise spot at the Totem Pole was great. My guide, Tully, gave me much information about the Valley, it’s history and the Navajo people. Take this tour! You will be glad you did!
Our tour left on time, our vehicle was clean and comfortable and expertly handled through ruts and soft sand by our guide, Tully. We arrived at our first stop with plenty of time to set up before dawn, well before any others. We enjoyed the peace of the pre-dawn stars from the valley floor and the beautiful blue green light along the horizon. Tully took us to excellent locations to capture the sunburst and then throughout the morning, to other lovely places where we continued ato be the first to arrive. Throughout the tour, Tully offered exceptional camera angle and setting suggestions that kept us moving. When we were done, he explained where to go out of the park for some additional shots back at the Valley. Without reservation, we highly recommend Phillips Photography tours.
Great tour with emphasis on getting good photos, guide was knowledgeable and helpful, did not feel rushed, got to see some great places. Hope to be back for more!
I picked Phillips photography from looking at their website. I had no reason to pick them other than it sounded like a good choice. Well I'm glad I did. Carl Phillips responded immediately and kept in touch until the morning of the tour. The guide was extremely knowledgable about the right spots to photograph and even was very gracious about carrying some of my equipment. One of the other IMPORTANT reasons to use them is that you travel in an enclosed van. I saw many other photo tour vehicles that weren't enclosed and the customers sitting in the back with scarves over their nose and mouth. Believe me it is dusty. Overall a great experience and I would highly recommend them. Ken
Phillips Photography Tour of Monument Valley was worth every penny (and more!). Carl knows the area like only a local can. He takes you where the tourists don't go, where the sand is fresh and without footprints, where the sun lights up the formations at dawn and where you can get shots ranging from beautiful to quirky. He was great to work with setting up the tour to match my interests, able to suggest things to look for and explain what we were seeing. I'll hire him again, next time I'm out there. Highly recommend!
My guide (Tule?) was very knowledgeable & helpful. He pointed out vantage points for shots that I was not aware of. He was also very responsive to stopping as I saw views that I wanted to shoot. The tour also goes to areas that you can’t access without a guide so is definitely worth it. Before I booked this I had a question about which tour would suit my needs. I emailed the company, got an immediate automated response that they were out of the office, and a full response in 24 hours! They sent reminders & called me the night before to confirm & to tell me who my guide would be. I am very impressed with the service & organization!
Tooley was our guide, and did an excellent job, I will highly recommended him, and your company to any of my friends. I will be coming back, and bringing my son. I will be asking for Tooley, next time. Thanks Tooley!!!!!
We experienced a great time with a nice and very helpful guide.
Tooley(not sure of spelling) was a great guide. He told me about some Navajo traditions, took me to awesome sites, and even sang a song in Navajo. The sacred area of Big Hogan with the natural image of the face was powerful.
small group tailored for photographers...going to great spots and got good suggestion for positions and angles
Our tour guide took us to the perfect spot for a sunrise photo shoot and then to numerous others places that we would not have had access to. Overall it was a great experience.
Tully picked us up right on time and took us to several excellent locations to photograph the sunrise. He made suggestions without being intrusive. Then he took us to several arches to photograph. Great tour!
this tour has a set route and locations, however these have been selected with photography in mind and our guide was very helpful by pointing out several "suggested" shooting points at each location
Carl was amazing. Carl combines his love of photography with his detailed experience in this beautiful, majestic place. Carl spent time recommending camera settings and composition to make these shots outstanding. You will also gain access to areas beyond the tourist points. Do it!
Tully was an excellent guide. He was very knowledgeable and incredibly helpful in pointing out great spots for sunrise photos. I'd highly recommend Phillips and Tully as your guide.
Fantastic sights and great guide. !!
Great tour and service. As a professional travel photographer in Monument Valley for a magazine assignment, I did many researches to see if I could reach Totem Pole and Artist's Point on my own but understood it was impossible - I needed an experienced tour guide to get me in those locations at the right time (sunrise or sunset). I never use photo tour but in Monument Valley you have to and Philips Photo Tours are the best. Very happy to have done this!
I did both the sunrise and sunset tours and both were fantastic. Tully and Carlos were both excellent guides. I thought they both went above and beyond what they were required to do to give me a good tour and I would like to do the overnight mesa excursion with them next time I come out. Just one minor nit: the "sunset" tour ended at 7PM, about 15 minutes before actual sunset. I would have preferred it start and end a half hour later so as to include the actual time of sunset. OTOH we did get to photograph the sunrise earlier that day.
Carl was helpful and informative.
Do not miss the chance to truly experience Monument Valley. With Ray Phillips as your guide you will be in the best (not fastest or easiest) spot to truly get magnificent photos no matter your experience. You will benefit from his lifetime of photography experience in the area, as well as his family’s. Not only in placement in the valley, but lighting, framing and challenging how you look at and perceive what you are seeing. He is so willing to share with very helpful instructions if asked about camera settings and framing to get the most out of your opportunities. He automatically adjusts to any physical challenges of those on his tour might have. He is generous in his willingness to share his knowledge of the Navajo/Pueblo culture and history that is so rich in this area. Ray’s passion and love of this valley shows in everything he does and is passed on to those who choose to travel with him. To not take one of his tours would be to not to have experienced this stunning and magical land.
Very knowledgeable guide, Ray made a wonderful photography experience.
Ray has an excellent knowledge of photographic locations and a wealth of local knowledge. Very helpful and a pleasure to work with.
I had a great experience with both the sunrise and sunset photo experiences. I highly recommend to anyone looking to have a truly amazing photo trip.
Ray was very informative and helpful. He was never rushed or intrusive and was very good at giving us hints about settings and how to get a great photo of the site we were visiting. He shared a lot of great info about his people and their history which added a lot to the sights we were seeing. He pointed out things we would never have seen on out own and how to get the best shot in that light. We took both the sunrise and sunset tour in one day and there was absolutely no repetition in sites of stories. Ray has some amazing driving skills! We had never driven straight up the side of a rock mountain before! It was a great day.
On behalf of me and my wife and two other fellow travelers, we were very appreciative of the competence and friendliness of our Phillips Photography Tours Guide by the name of Tully. He took us to amazing places for photography both for the Monument Valley Sunrise Tour and for the Mystery Valley Sunset Tour. Our sunrise experience at the Totems was absolutely breathtaking. If you want to go to unique places in Monument or Mystery Valley to capture amazing photography images, chose Phillips Photography Tours and ask for Tully or his brother Ray as your guide. You will not be disappointed. Bob and Betty from Idaho Falls, ID and Jack and Dianne from Portland, OR.
Ray did a fantastic job of enthusiastically showing use the best photography locations and assisting us with our camera functions. I would highly recommend Ray again.
