A Journey Through Time at Monte Alban

As a cultural anthropologist, I have always been drawn to places where history and culture intertwine seamlessly. My recent journey to Oaxaca de Juárez was no exception, and the Monte Alban Tour was a highlight that left an indelible mark on my soul. The day began with a warm welcome from our guides, Zenón and Rocío, who exuded a genuine love for their homeland. Their passion was infectious, and as we set off towards Monte Alban, I felt a sense of anticipation and reverence.

Monte Alban, perched majestically atop a mountain, is a testament to the ingenuity and spirituality of the ancient Zapotec civilization. As we approached the site, Zenón led us in a traditional ritual, asking the sun for permission to enter the sacred grounds. This gesture, spoken in the Zapotec language, set the tone for a deeply immersive experience. Walking among the ruins, I was struck by the architectural brilliance and the palpable energy that seemed to resonate from the stones themselves. It was a reminder of the rich tapestry of human history and the enduring legacy of those who came before us.

A Gastronomic Delight

After our exploration of Monte Alban, we were treated to a culinary feast that showcased the vibrant flavors of Oaxacan cuisine. In Santo Tomás Jalieza, we were introduced to the art of waist loom weaving. The rhythmic motion of the loom was mesmerizing, a dance of threads that resulted in vibrant textiles. Finally, in San Martin Tilcajete, we encountered the whimsical world of alebrijes. These brightly colored wooden figures, representing spirit guides, are a celebration of imagination and creativity.

Each workshop visit was a reminder of the resilience and creativity of the Oaxacan people. By supporting these artisans, we contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage and the livelihoods of those who dedicate their lives to their craft. As I left each workshop, I carried with me a deeper appreciation for the artistry and the stories behind each piece.
